Are there treatments for anxiety besides medication?!

Question: I've had problems with anxiety for quite some time. I followed the medication route. I have found medication to be effective at first, then it stops working and since all medication causes physical dependence it creates problems even worse than the initial anxiety. So, I'd save any pharmaceutical intervention for if you ever get to a point where you have no other choice.

Now, anxiety is very manageable. I know that the problem with anxiety is that the mind races and wanders into areas that it generally doesn't need to be at that moment. So, you need to learn to focus your attention away from negative thoughts and practice something that you can do anywhere. Look up "progressive muscle relaxation", and try deep breathing where you inhale normally but exhale slowly. Also, to break negative thought patterns, I've found visualizing something concrete helped, like a number or a stop sign.

You can beat it, trust me.

i have anxiety and heres what i do. i briefly took luvox and it helped. but i no longer take meds. i drink non decaffeinated beverages and i also keep away from sugar. i drink herbal teas at night and i exercises about a half hour a day. i walk about 3 miles a day and when i have a lot of anxiety at night i will take Valerian root, cava cava or melatonin. i have greatly learned to eliminate all stress from my life. i go out of my way to take the less stressful route. i also try not to eat many carbohydrates. carbohydrates turn to sugar in the body. you have to always work at it. soon leading a less stressful and less anxiety free way of life become a habit to you. i have really been procrastinating about taking meds again. but when i was on 50 Mg's of luvox it really helped me also. but i have been drug freed for 10 years now. work at it.

One other answerer - John - has it dead bang on. Your anxiety may be due to a chronic low blood sugar condition (hypoglycemia). A doctor can do a 5 hour glucose tolerance test to check it out, and should, before prescribing meds.

Diet and exercise (as John noted) are among the best ways to control low blood sugar.
