Voluntary mutism?!

Question: I have a friend who was the victim of incest. She talks with me normally, but I recently found out that she won't talk to any adults who aren't her parents. I can't find much information on what she's going through; would it be voluntary mutism or is it mutism at all? Any info would be appreciated!

Mutism is the inability to talk. She can physically talk to them but she chooses not to.

I am assuming that it wasn't her mother or father who victimized her? It may be a mistrust of adults because of her victimization. If she was forced into a sexual situation by a relative that she ahd learned to trust she might be scared to trust anyone new. A good way to avoid knowing people and starting to trust them is to not talk to them.

Also, did she undergoany sort of therapy for her past? Though if she doesn't talk to adults I doubt a therapist would be successful right away.

selectively mute. until she decides to talk. she should see a therapist... she needs to talk to someone who can really help her. because the longer she stores it inside the more it's gonna hurt.
