What are the possible side effects of prozac?!

Question: what have you experienced?

Answers: what have you experienced?

In the last several years, Prozac (Fluoxetine) has become the most widely prescribed anti-depressant in the western world. Besides treating depression, Prozac is used to treat obsessive-compulsive and panic disorders. It is the oldest SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, meaning it works by altering the action of the neurotransmitter, serotonin in the brain), with twenty years of research behind it showing now known long-term side effects. Prozac has few side effects when compared to other anti-depressant drugs. These side effects may include dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, sedation, and weight gain.

So how do you know that what you are experiencing is in fact a Prozac side effect? Well, if you are experiencing a symptom that wasn't there previously, it's most probably a Prozac side effect.

Prozac is associated with insomnia, restlessness, nausea, and tension headaches, which normally go away within one to two weeks from the time it was first taken. One possible Prozac side effect, which remains for the time it is taken, is its effect on your sex life. It often reduces desire and can delay or interfere with orgasm, in both women and men. Fatigue and memory loss are other possible problems. These side effects subside when you stop taking the drug.

In some people, the effectiveness of Prozac seems to diminish with time. So, if you are experiencing a new symptom that you did not have before starting your course of Prozac, it is probably a Prozac side effect.

i'm on a small dose of prozac and a large dose of effexor..
when i was first started it was just on prozac and the only side effects i got from it was drowziness...and its mostly in the first 3 or 4 days you take it. after that it doesn't affect me as much.

Heard something about this on the BBC today. Apparently there are hundreds of thousands of folk in UK who have been prescribed Prozac by their GPs -situation is now thought to be out of hand.

When you start hearing this sort of thing on the BBC you know for sure that the UK.gov are thinking about putting a stop to it.

My advice is take care.

Really really really bad heartburn on 60mg a day. Take it with Ranitidine (gets rid of heartburn) and your fine.

Head-ache and memory loss

I have not had any side effects maybe I have been lucky, but I do know all abou it if I miss a few.

it sent me crazy!! i had undiagnosed bipolar and and ended up attempting suicide. so not good for me! but hey, thats the gp's fault for blaming everything on depression and getting u through that door as quick as you came in it!
xxx

they have something in them to keep you awake

While not everyone taking PROZAC experiences side effects, the side effects that people taking PROZAC can experience most include nausea, difficulty sleeping, drowsiness, anxiety, nervousness, weakness, loss of appetite, tremors, dry mouth, sweating, decreased sex drive, impotence, and/or yawning. These tend to be mild and usually go away within a few weeks of starting treatment. These side effects generally aren't serious enough to cause most people to stop taking PROZAC.

If you are concerned about any of them then see your doctor first before just stopping taking any medication.

The side effects I found when going onto Prozac was sweating and loss of appetite. These did only last about a month at the most and I have now been on Prozac 5 years and feel ok on them, I have my up and down days but everyone doe's and I don't have any side effects to the medication anymore.
Good luck xxx

i agree with indiana frenchman.
Also look at it this way....what are the side affects of not taking prozac?......ive been on it for 15 years...its probably saved my life

ive been on it for 11 years 60mg, i dont really get much side effects other than memory loss and low sex drive otherwise, its helped me greatly!

accordin t0 my leaflet possible side effects are; itchy skin, difficulty breathing, tightness of chest, swelling of face/ankles mood changes, fits, feeling agitated, irritable confused, feel very cold or feaverish......
also sometimes these;
feel or r sick, diarrhoea, indigestion, changes in taste, dry mouth, hesdache, sleeplessness or strange dreams, dizziness, loss of appetite, tired or drowsy, anxious or nervous, unusually high mood, lack concentration or hallucinate, suffer from twitching, tremor, fits, changes in urine function, blood disturbances including bruising, poor sexual performance, milk leaking from breasts, hair loss, yawning, changes in eyesight, sweating, muscle or joint pain........ thats about all it says on my leaflet
good luck with ur choices....

I took it for three days and i have never been so ill and felt so screwed up in all my life, i ended up in A&E. I don't know why this was and i think i had a very rare bad experience with it but all i know is i would never touch it again, my heart felt like it was gonna jump outta my chest and i was vomiting every hour...i think unless you really need anti-depressants then don't take them, get someone to talk to instead and get some exercise, it makes a big difference

Prozac is possibly the most prescribed antidepressant in history, and therefore a huge variety of side-effects have been reported. You have to put this in perspective though- for most people this is a rather benign drug, which was partly what made it so popular in the first place. If you start worrying about side-effects before you take a medication, the chances are you'll get them, as your brain will be constantly monitoring for any changes in how you feel, many of which will have nothing to do with the drug itself.

It makes you tired all the time
