It is usually developed after a child is 5 years old if they been abused or neglected in this critical period of their development. They then form 'seperate' personalities to get away from the horrific situations they are in and can become so involved with the pretend character, it becomes real in their minds.

they usually split personality when theyre applying fo a job or when theyre working in a job and when they get home theyre themselves again because they dont have to act a such way like the manager wants
schizophrenia is also referred to as split personality and has no definitive one cause, but there are several contributing factors such as genetics, traumatic episodes in ones life, chemical imbalances in the brain, drug and alcohol abuse, physical trauma resulting in brain injury, or strokes.
I have a minor case of this, seems to be going away some now but it used to be in much more affect.
Mine developed over time. I cannot give you a scientific response but I can give you an answer derived from experience.
some are more severe than others, but most all of them tend to be affected by things they have gone through in the past, and/or stress.
Mine was kind of a person that reacted impulsively and fought with vengeance. He wanted revenge at any cost. He seemed to have been all my pushed down, bottled up feelings of what was happening to me. Such as, I was beat up on a regular basis and kidnapped when I was a child, my mom tended to create a fake utopia in my mind and kept me ignorant from the rest of the world. I always thought thats just how things were. I later found out about the fact that I am a big kid and could actually fight back, (I never fought back because my mother taught me that it was wrong to fight or hurt) and thats where "he" came into play. "he" would think of elaborate plans to kill or torture or just plain hurt the people that were beating me up, all because the real me pushed back those thoughts due to moral reasons.

Personality starts to develop from about the age of 9.
this is when the child gets a feel for life and their surroundings.
Spllit personality can be defined in many ways.
Only a proper diagnosis will confirm this.
Could be a multitude of factors which cause erratic behaviour.
I have never known an infant to be a heckle and jyde.
They are guided from their parents and mimic many actions.
A split personality can often be advantagous.
