Why are people so ignorant to Mental health and Weight propblems?!

Question: I'm sick of people making comment about Mental health and how if we got off the medication we'd feel better...do you even have a clue as far as what meds do to people with mh problems? They make us able to cope with life, they save lives. As far as weight I am 300 lbs because i have a underactive thyroid..i go out every day and walk and eat healthy I'm not over weight because it was my choice!!

I would believe that ignorance is the answer, but also denial.
Us humans want to be perfect in any shape or state of mind.
No we dont always have a choice in our sizes, nor can we control our minds. (my man always says that control is an illusion)...it is hard to accept that a large person is normal. Its even harder to accept that mental illness will not harm ourselves in any way.
Mental illness is a disease not unlike cancer or the common cold. Thyroidism is a gland disorder that is sometimes controlled by medication, because the body cannot keep it level. Thyroidism is very rampant in society and is not socially acceptable because it is very visual.
We see fat people and assume that they like it that way. Not so true, it becomes an obsticle in lifestyles, causing emotional unstability, and introverts. People need to become more aware of this `disease` because of the onset of mental illness that it can create, because of the unacceptable visual likeness of a unhealthy and ugly body that it creates.
Unfortuanatley this is due to a lot of commercialism , making the very slim seem more healthy and likable.

well...you certainly got that off of your chest!! dont have a go at us...we are not all like that!

People are scared of what they don't undertstand.

There is something to be said for welling in your own self pity just coz u got a 'condition' to help explain away extra weight.

You DONT NEED 2 explain anything to anyone. Find friends who dont bother with stupid things like BMI.

Oh yes. DONT kid yourself that you can skip ur meds, ever.

People don't realize that we are all the same. I've seen people criticize a homeless guy for being an addict and then light up a cigarette. Smokers are addicts too. We all have our problems, some of us think that we can hide it better.
There is no shame in being on meds for mental health problems. There is shame in having mental health problems and not getting help.

Mostly I think it is lack of knowledge and information. Sadly the idea of mental illness scares people. I think it can be easier to think of it as laziness, a need to 'grow up and deal with it' or something like that than actually recognize this big scary problem is for real.

Then there are people who have either had or seen someone else have adverse reactions to medication. I think it is then easy to jump to the conclusion that all medication is bad and will not help. It is also known that in some cases a change in lifestyle (so eating right, exercising more etc) can have amazing results. It certainlty helps even the more severe cases. However the fact is that many people need to take medication as well as trying other treatments and hearing constantly that medication is bad for them or making them ill is not helpful. The opposite, where people are refused other treatments because they chose not to take medication is equally damaging.

I am sorry that you are having these problems with your weight. It must be very very frustrating. I have known a few people with the same problem. One of them it took years to get her medication just right but when they did she lost a lot of the excess weight she was carrying. I hope that this happens with you also. In the meantime, I hope that the regular exercise and healthy eating help to keep you fit in other ways and also help lift your mood.

It must be awfully hard to feel that people are judging you by your weight, especially when you know you are doing the best you can to control it. I don't know if it helps or not but try and remember that anyone who does so is ignorant and therefore not worth your time.

I think it is also important to remember that not everybody judges or has these views. Many people recognize that mental illness is a serious and genuine problem. They know medication is one way of helping to treat it and can even save lives. They also know better than to judge someone by their size. Try and ignore those who do these things ( I know it's hard) and leave yourself open to the people who will get to know YOU.

They are ignorant and choose not to open their minds to it.

It is very rude they must have NO common sense.

Good question ;)
