What is the cause of depression.?!

Question: Clinical depression is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain - usually serotonin, dopamine & noripenephrin. It can be treated with the right medication or the right amounts of amino acids such as 5htp, L-tyrosine, GABA and others. Circumstantial depression (if someone you love dies, you loose a job etc) is caused because you are down and sad and usually ends once you get past the initial greiving process. Certain medications can cause depression like beta blockers. A low thyroid can also cause depression.

There are a lot of causes for depression including Grief,(Death or divorce) and even chemical imbalance in the brain. Even a psychologist would have to know you to tell what the cause of yours would be.

there are so many different causes of depression it would be impossible to name them all. It could be a medical condition or something thats not balanced in the brain.

Depression is mostly caused by how we choose to handle the obstacles that we face in life. Sometimes a bad thing happens and if you face it with an "I can deal with this" attitude you are less likely to be depressed than if you deal with it with a "Why does bad stuff always happen to me?" kind of attitude.

The way you were raised.... The things you've experienced, drug/alcohol abuse, Chemical inbalances....
There are more too...

A lot of things. Arguably, it's caused by your environment. The old adage, "A rolling stone gathers no moss" has a lot of truth to it.

well we all get down every now and then but for severe cases i think it has something to do with a chemical imbalance...

I think some people are genetically predisposed. Some experience a sad shift in mood during the darker months. Certainly sad, emotional occurences in life can make it worse. I think 1 in 6 people suffer from type of depression and more women than men. Get some help. It's first and foremost a disease you did not ask for, and there are treatments available. Get some sunshine, too. Be well.

It could be a chemical imbalance, or a situation of prolonged and extreme stress, or grief and loss.

Talk to your doctor and/or a counselor to uncover the reasons for your depression -- and from there you will be able to get help to start feeling better.

Well it is an OPEN QUESTION and that is the answer IT IS AN OPEN QUESTION. There are many reasons and you have to address the one you have:
Financial
Broken Heart
Hormones
A death in the family etc.,

See the doctor and talk it over. Sometimes a short course of tablets help you over the worst part.

Trav had it when he said "low seratonin levels" seratonin is a chemical made in the brain - good source for seratonin = the sun - thats why a lot of people in the winter have seasonal depression they don't get enough sun light so there seratonin levels drop.

Depression can be caused by MANY things.

Sometimes it's pure biology. Sometimes it's pure psychology. Sometime it's life.

The knack is to work out which it is.

There are many many reasons. Sometimes it is seasonal. Losing someone. Money problems. The list could go on and on. What a person needs to do is find out what the problem is and try to solve it. If it is health related, go see your doctor. Sometimes, if you talk with someone that you trust, that helps. If it is caused by something that you can't change then you have to learn to deal with it. Some people are put on medication to help them. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

I did a paper on this. Here is the information I gathered: -
Sometimes people get seriously depressed after a intense incident, like a divorce in the family, someone you love dying, a stressful home life, violence, or breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend. Other times, depression just happens by itself.
Often teenagers react to the pain of depression by getting into trouble; trouble with alcohol, drugs, or sex; trouble with school or bad grades; problems with family or friends. This is another reason why it's important to get treatment for depression before it leads to other trouble.
Myths About Depression
MYTH: It's normal for teenagers to be moody; Teens don't suffer from "real" depression.
FACT: Depression is more than just being moody. And it can affect people at any age, including teenagers.
MYTH: Telling an adult that a friend might be depressed is betraying a trust. If someone wants help, he or she will get it.
FACT: Depression, which saps energy and self-esteem, interferes with a person's ability or wish to get help. It is an act of true friendship to share your concerns with an adult who can help. No matter what you "promised" to keep secret, your friend's life is more important than a promise.
MYTH: Talking about depression only makes it worse.
FACT: WRONG! Talking about your feelings to someone who can help, like a psychologist, is the first step towards beating depression. Talking to a close friend can also provide you with the support and encouragement you need to talk to your parents or school counselor about getting evaluated for depression. Please ask for help, that shows real courage!

depression is a lack of serotonin either by transmitters that release serotonin re-uptake too much or the transmitter releases too little. This can become evident during the onset of adolescence. Depression is a serious condition that you should discuss with a doctor who can prescribe necessary treatment whether it be counseling or medication or both. Either way you should not try going it alone. there are many reasons people experience severe sadness such as dealing with a death but never confuse depression with severe sadness. Sadness can be overcome with in time depression can cause more serious problems including suicidal thoughts.

The scientific cause for depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain. The neurotransmitters in your brain (monoamines such as serotonin and norepinephrine) are at low levels. (they are not re-uptaked into your brain, they are produced but not let in.)

Now, what causes the imbalance in your brain? Well, that could be a very wide variety of things from nutrition to stress, sentinel event (such as divorce, break up, death of a loved one, illness), negative outlook on life, negative people around you, or any abuse that you may have endured, so on and so forth.

Treatment is generally medication to increase the level of neurotransmitter re-uptake in your brain. Some are able to with just therapy and positive thinking although, this is diffucult to do when you are depressed. Kudos to those that are able to get through it without the drugs, but they are very few.
