Can you go to the E.R. if...?!

Question: I've been trying to find a psychiatrist in the area and no one is taking new patients or some other excuse. I went to the outpatient therapy at the hospital before but felt the psychiatrist I saw was more hurtful than helpful. And now I can't see anyone else out of there because if would be 'unethical' from where I say a different dr there. I call BS but whatever. So here's the problem. I can't get any meds I need, no one is even willing to set up an initial appointment! My question is can I go to the er for an evaluation and maybe some meds? It seems ridiculous that someone who is depressed, paranoid, cutting, hallucinating and has suicidal thoughts can't get help that they need. Life is getting to be a bit to much, I've broken down multiple times just today. So do you think they'd help me or not? I know I can't keep going back, but just give me something to calm down a little until I can get help.

That's awful that they'd treat you like that! Can you go to a different hospital, or get an appointment with your doctor? Until then, go and spend time with people, anyone to stop you from killing yourself. Remember that this WILL pass and you will be glad you lived through it.

I can't believe the hospital did that to you, it's made me all angry. Not that that helps you much, but it's certainly not your fault. You could just go back there and refuse to move until they sort you out. The thing is, medication for depression builds up slowly over the course of a few weeks. They won't be able to give you something that magically makes it go away. Well they will, but only while you're in the psych ward. You need longer term treatment. But go back and kick up a fuss. Obviously something inside you still wants to live. Keep a firm grip on that part and let it pull you out.

Good luck and I'll be thinking of you xxxx

What about your regular doctor (GP)? Could he prescribe your meds until you are able to see a Psychiatrist. My GP writes out my Xanax scrips for me without a problem. I can't get to a Psychiatrist until March. You could try that way. The ER isn't the best however if you are feeling suicidal perhaps you might want to check a mental health clinic or hospital. Good luck.

it may be a little extreme but yes go to the ER and tell them you have intentions of harming yourself..you will quickly get an evaluation and most likely a 72 hour psych hold but you will get the begenning steps for your help started

ADDED: i know how you feel about wanting help and not getting it, it took me 3 months to get into a mental health clinic when i moved and after that 3 month wait they refused me a counselor and I am SMI

If you are feeling suicidal or homicidal, you should go to the ER. They will be able to give you a small quantity of medication to keep you calm until you can see a psychologist/iatrist. They will also be able to refer you to someone.

In fact, if it isn't an emergency, you could call the mental health department at your local hospital to get a referral if you don't want to spend the money for the ER.

Good luck!

yes, go... now! esp. if you are having those thoughts;; but they'll hold you for about 3 days in phsych. but it'll help you; They can help you.

tell me how it goes, kay?

Yes, I would go to the ER and when you talk to them DON'T try and be brave! Tell them the worst of how you are feeling or they too might fob you off as someone who is coping.

Tell them you are NOT coping! Even if only to get the ball rolling and get you some decent help.

The hospital system can suck! I feel for you. As for your GP its his/her job to find you a psychiatrist! That is what we pay them big money for. The GP should be doing a referral for you!! Find a new GP and give yourself a whole fresh start.

I wish you well.

If you're feeling suicidal, then yes, you can go to the emergency room and they will give you an evaluation.

If you have "gone to the well" too many times though, just stopping in for meds when you're feeling this way, then the personnel might feel that you are just a drug user looking for a quick fix. (I'm NOT saying that you are).

Anyway -- you do sound somewhat desperate, so I would go to the ER if I were you. Maybe they will admit you for evaluation and help get you calmed down.

Stop going to psychiatrists. They treat having a personality as a disease. You don't need medication I suspect.

You need to look into other options. I'd want to send you to a cognitive/behavioral therapist myself if it was up to me. That approach has had great results with others I've known with your profile.

Failing that, even a hypnotherapist would do the trick as a short term solution. But stop focusing on psychiatry as a solution, OK? Even a Master's degree in social work is a good bet on a trained counselor.
