What to do if a loved one wants to commit suicide and how to get them help?!

Question: It takes only two other people of the family to sign a form and have that person committed into a hospital and put on suicide watch. I mean mental health hospital or clinic, not just any ER hospital. If your that concerned don't leave that person alone because you just don't know if they are really that willing to go through with it. I wish you luck.

call the suicide hotline.
http://suicidehotlines.com/ quick!

Call 911...immediately. Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem.

The only thing not to do is leave them alone. Gwet them out of the house. Take them shopping, what ever thiy're into. Just Don't stay quiet about it. Tell another family member. GET THEM HELP!!! FAST, don't let them do anything harmful!

National Suicide Hotline 1-800-Suicide (1-800-784-2433)

Don't call 911 unless they are sitting there with a gun or something. The cops will come, and your loved one will lose choice as to which hospital to go to. I ended up in a horrible state hospital that way, and it was VERY abusive! I know they are even worse in some other states. A lot of people with mental illness are very afraid of the police because the police can be very confrontational, even bullying. (In my case, the sheriff was nice).

I would say, if a suicide attempt seems likely, look in the yellow pages and find which hospitals have a mental health department, and call up and see if they have beds available, and take your loved one to the ER. Make sure you take his/her prescription meds with you so they know what he/she is taking.

If the person is just THINKING about suicide, and isn't planning anything specific, then that is severe depression or bipolar disorder, and you want to get an appointment in the next few days.

Another factor to consider is how good that person's impulse control is.

All the best to both of you.

PS if they hold you in a hospital, it is a 72 hour hold, not a commitment. Hardly anyone gets committed anymore. Requires a judge, and a patient who refuses treatment for very severe mental illness.

If someone is a harm to themselves or to someone else they MUST have a psych consult, ASAP. This can be done by ringing 911 and telling them your loved one is having suicidal thoughts. Even if you ring your local police, they will help. Even Britney Spears couldn't get away from it.

Make a 'no-suicide pact' with your loved one. Write it down, both of you sign it.

If you love this person, do something NOW. You might not get another chance.
