i had a nervous breakdown a few years ago. i ended up on anti depressants, and had to talk to a counsellor and a psychiatrist on a regular basis.

anti depressants aren't a cure for depression. all they do is get your symptoms under control so that u are more able to deal with the root cause of your depression. that's why any sensible doctor will prescribe u counselling as well as medication. the tablets can take up to 3 months to level out, and for u to see the full effects. the doctor might have to alter the dosage, depending on how u are reacting to them. i ended up taking double the dose that i started off on.

not sure if your anxiety will ever 'go away' without u getting to grips with the cause behind those feelings. even when i was on a high dose of Dothiepin - an anti depressant designed to deal with anxiety, i still felt anxious. true, i wasn't as anxious as i had been before taking anti depressants, but i was by no means cured.

you could always try helping things along with some natural methods. getting exercise every day is a great way to deal with depression and anxiety. it's not easy to talk yourself into doing exercise when u are feeling down / worried, but it really is worth it. u don't have to join a gym or anything drastic. i used to walk around the village every day. but u could get an exercise dvd, or just run up and down the stairs ! exercise helps the brain to produce more serotonin - which has a calming and positive effect on your mood. serotonin can also be boosted by eating bananas, nuts, lettuce, and by taking a daily vitamin B complex tablet (easy to get from health food shops, supermarkets, chemists).

i hope things start settling down for u soon. feel free to e-mail me - the link is on my profile page. i'll always reply, and do my best to help.

take care. x

I haven't got a clue, but I hope you feel better soon...

yes, antidepressants really work but takes a bit time.

Check your email and IM

ive emailed you chick.

after giving up alocohol I experienced anxiety and panic attacks. The panic attacks were far and few and have now disappeared with counselling and self control. Some anxiety still persists mildly and is on the better now. Am off all medications( I was on diazepam) half tab a day , which is really mild. Now its 3 weeks am off all meds. Feel beter and am back doing almost all activities. Sleep very well at night.

Hi yes they help me a lot and i see my psychiatrist twice a month during the winter and once during summer. Have been doing this for years and for one thing she stopped me from drinking, which was a life long problem. So i have to say do it all because it does help

I think those drugs are dangerous. I would switch to herbs right away. Once you start coming back off those drugs you can be worse than when you started. Therapy is money down the drain. Talk to the relatives that you feel close too. But most of all get on your knees and get closer to your Lord and saviour. Develop a relationship with him and he will guide you and comfort you thru whatever tragedy is befalling you.

The medicine made me 10 times worse and even affected other aspects of my health. Then, I went the natural route, and I have NEVER felt better. Look into getting this book: Natural Cures by Kevin Trudeau.

Poor you. Try not to panic over the duration of this illness. That in itself is feeding the anxiety. Anti-depressants took about 8 weeks to 'kick in' in my case. But that was in conjunction with sleepers too. Ignor anyone who says about getting addicted to anti d's. It's NOT true, and besides you need them at the moment.

A same sex phsyciatrist can help. They can help you look or think about things in a different light.

depends on the person, I think. But it normally does work and it will take a while for it to work. The body needs to get used to it and realize that the medicine's there and needs to get going! I hear it's supposed to start working about 3 weeks or more after you first start taking it. Talking to someone also seem to help.

Hi Emzi,Yes,I have had depression for 2yrs,and anxiety disorder for 10yrs.Anti depressants do help, but do take about 3-4wks to reach their full effect. My anxiety disorder has plagued me for many years, and although medication does help to control it,it doesn't make the problem go away.In my opinion, most Psychciatrists are a waste of space.Perhaps a psycologist may be beneficial.Good luck, and hang in there.Even though it may seem that your depression will never go away,it will with time.

Sent u an email.

Hi emzy, I had a spell of depression, I had some side affects which had me running to the loo on occasions which could be embarrassing.

They helped in two ways for me, It made me less likely to climb in that big hole or at least the hole was alot shallower when it was there. They also helped me mentally in that I could recognise that I was depressed, that I wasn't making it up in my head and the doctor believed me.

Perversley for me I found out my wife was having an affair during my episode and we split, gradually I realised that something I could see no escape from, because I chose to stick it out actually did have a different way. (she did me a very big favour ha ha). Suddenly I realised I had control and options, that whatever happens I'm more resilient and stronger than I ever imagined.

I guess I was lucky my problem presented itself and literally ran off over the horizon.

Take the medication but also seek to resolve the root cause of your depression, give yourself all those options that will make you feel better.

Now I realise that I can't solve the whole worlds problems, I only really have control of my own, I now know not to worry about everything as I can't solve it all, I don't even worry about the big stuff, I just realise that I'll get through it all somehow.

I do however smoke too much, drink too much and I'm getting fatter and fatter, whilst falling ever nearer bankruptcy. I can only do what I can do, I have options and with that hope.

Emzy you are strong and kind, things will get better at some point. x

You should start feeling better soon. If you don't; then go back to the doctor and he may recommend a different tablet.

It takes as long as it takes. It varies according to the condition. You may be on them forever if needs required that.

Your doctor will tell you the answer to that.

firstly hope you feel better soon anti depressants do
not always work it depends on if your depression is biological or psychological so to speak anti depressants will only help if you have a chemical imbalance in the brain where if it's psychological i'e life factors a psychologist and CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) works best.
i was on medication for a couple of years various different kinds but when i started talking therapy it really made a difference
good luck hope things work out

I've had anxiety for about 4 years now. I've took every medicine possible for my age group. It didnt help. I've tried counslers and physcietrists, still didnt help. The only time I'm fullly cured is during the summer when school isnt happening.

It's kind of like a mind thing, you have to work yourself through it, even though its hard.

unfortunately allopathic doctors DO NOT have answers for neurological problems.
for permanent help and cure try these
Yoga, meditation, Pilate
Breathing exercises
Tapping technique
Affirmations and Self Hypnosis or Self Talk.
