I have a 7yr old son in 2nd grade that is haveing trouble in focusing on his wor!

Question: My son is 7 yrs old and I know he is not ADD, because he is very calm. He does all his work and gets 100's and in the 90's but he just can not focus in class or at home. If he was set on a timer for 2mins. it takes him 7mins. to finish. I am not sure if it is a diet that needs to be changed or what. But I don't really have any trouble with him with his work just with him getting easily distracted or focusing on his work. What can I do to help him.

okay so it might be add, i have adhd which is attention deficit hyper disorder, where as add means attention deficit disorder he doesnt have to be hyper, i would suggest taking him to the doctor to get him checked and on meds if he is add

he might just not want to work or be slower at working then most kids his age

you don't need to be hyper to Have ADD, thats ADHD, when you are hyper aswell, its very possible that he could still have ADD

i think he is a normal 7 yr old boy..

One of my friends has a similar problem with her son. He's really smart and gets good grades, but he's always bouncing off of the walls and she has to nag him constantly to make sure he remembers his homework and stays focused on it when he's doing it. In his case though, I'd be willing to bet that it's caused by all the time he spends playing video games and all of the junk he eats. He practically lives on Mountain Dew and pizza and he spends almost all of his free time playing video games :(

Obviously, I don't know what your son's diet or routine is like, but I would make sure that he eats plenty of healthy food, especially a good breakfast, and that he doesn't consume too much sugar or caffeine. Kids who play video games constantly tend to have much shorter attention spans.
The previous answer could also be right - he may just be a normal 7-year-old boy who gets bored occasionally and starts to fidget. It happens. If you are really concerned, I would take him to a doctor or counselor and see if they can recommend something that might help him focus, be it a change in diet or a new homework routine. I would avoid putting him on medication though.
Good luck!

How funny, I am in this exact same boat!
My 7 year old has always been on the honor roll- always placed "higher than expected" on state tests, and is constantly being harped on by his teacher for not being focused.

I have had him evaluated by a child psychologist- who claims there is nothing wrong with him- he is just a very boyish boy.

His first grade teacher actually pushed to have him REevaluated- until she realized that the psychologist I had already taken him to was the one the school district would recommend- After that I called the principal (who by the way had never been talked to by the teacher about my son) and I never heard a sinle thing from the 1st grade teacher about it again.

now in a new state his 2nd grade teacher has the same problem with him- he is just easily distracted (when he chooses to be) and stubborn.
When I ask him why he doesnt do this or that with the rest of the class - the major reason he gets in trouble- he says hes bored, its too easy, or he already knows it.

What Im struggling with is - he doesnt like to take tests so when I have him tested for gifted programs he will only finish half the test on time (getting almost every question correct)

and If I have him moved ahead he will be out of his peer-class.

so Im just dealing with it on a day to day basis- and I am in constant communication with his teacher- which helps ALOT
there really isnt much else you can do.

I have one daughter with ADHD and another who is not and is very intelligent. At your son's age she was bored in class.
She would not look forward to homework - felt it was too easy etc. She was not being challenged. Maybe this is your sons situation.
