Such a drastic change in personality/behavior in a previously "good kid" is highly suspicious of substance use. Cocaine and amphetamines are commonly abused, but there are other drugs than can cause aggression and violence. However there are also psychiatric conditions such as conduct disorder or antisocial personality disorder which presents the same way. The best way to find out is to ask him, or get a urine drug screen.
Ask him how he's doing and mention that you noticed a lot of changes in his life and you are concerned.
You should have a long talk with him. Believe it or not, he may be looking for some sort of attention and it may make him feel better knowing that you care about him.
You can always bring up your concerns with a parent or family member as well. Just don't ignore it - the problems wont disappear, they will only get worse.
