What the heck is going on here?!

Question: My soon to be 5 year old step-daughter exhibits a highly hyperactive/oppositional/compulsive/dest... personality. After 3 years of fine-tuning our routine so that it is structured, firm, and loving, as well as weeding out dietary triggers, we have finally sought the help of a physician.
My husband has full custody of this child, and I am a stay at home mom with her and 2 other children of ours. She gets lots of attention and love, so thats not it. I have noticed these tendencies in her since before she was 2 years old. He bio-mom is bi-polar as well as her maternal grandmother. I am not familiar with bipolar disorder, so I am concerned that these wealth of issues she is having could have greater roots than simply ADHD.
For instance, she is just a 40lb child yet she pushed in the buttons on the TV set so hard that they actually collapsed into the tv. She has broken her blinds, rips apart books, has ripped off wall-paper and hits her baby sister. What is your take?

You should ensure the child's doctors are aware of the family history.

Often there is a cause for hereditary mental disease, for example a malfunctioning organ / food allergy. If modern medicine doesn't find you an answer then you could try a naturopath. Maybe sooner rather than later.

Could it be that the child is prescribed medication, and some or all of what you see is due to side-effects / wrong prescription?

Has the child been tested for neurological disorders (a friend of mine's child was aggressive, and was subsequently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis).

Does the child take adequate physical exercise? Is the child's diet optimum? Is the living environment healthy (fresh air, much peace and quiet etc)? Does the child watch TV / play computer games (viewing aggressive behaviour, and experiencing frightening situations, cause adrenalin/cortisol levels to be raised, and links to be formed in the brain which facilitate/encourage similar behaviour).

I believe one of the reasons for aggravated behaviour is electric appliances / chemicals in furnishings in the home / working environment. I find it interesting that she was aggressive to/around the TV !

I hope this helps and life will soon be easier for you all (especially the younger child).

Ax
.

Yikes. She needs professional help if you have done all you could and she still has these anger issues.
