Anyone else get the winter blues?!

Question: As the winter wears on my mood becomes more and more depressed and I have problems sleeping etc... Is there a name for this? I usually get better when the weather warms up and the days are longer.

well i used to but now i am enjoying each day and season to the fullest as it will most likely be my last one.
as you know my days are severely numbered and if anything it has taught me that each day and each season is a gift and one should try and never let ones self sink to low as we never know when it will be our last so try and enjoy time we have here as best we can.
blessed be crone......

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression, is an affective, or mood, disorder. Most SAD sufferers experience normal mental health throughout most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms in the winter or summer. The condition in the summer is often referred to as Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder, and can also include heightened anxiety.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD - pretty easy to remember). It has to do with the amount of daylight that you get, everyone is affected by it, but some people are so strongly affected that it really cuts into their quality of life, and some so badly that without treatment they become almost nonfuctional during the winter. The treatment is usually just bright lights for several hours a day, but your doctor can probably help you, see him and tell him what you're feeling.

me but lately they go year round

Yes...but its not a disorder...it's the absence of the sun!! We need seratonin to function happily and we can get it from the sun, sex, exercising, tanning...find alternative ways to feel better. You probably don't have a disorder ( I don't understand why everyone jumps to that!) Good luck!!

Ms Crone, it's called SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder. It's quite common among folks who live in the Northern Tier of U.S States and Western and Northern Canada, and Alaska, probably northern Asia and Europe as well. It's related to the amount of time that you get to spend in direct sunlight. Believe it or not, Sunlight is essential for all life, not just plants. It sets our biological clock. When it isn't up long enough, our bodies have a difficult time of adjusting to a regular sleep pattern and we become restless, bored, depressed, and just plain old moody. Here in Northern Minnesota, we call it Cabin Fever, from being cooped up from the bitter cold and deep snow for so long. There are people who are not affected by this at all but, most tend to be. The best way of dealing with it is to get as much time out in the sun as you can or in a sunny room as much as possible. Oh and FIND something to DO with your time, and the time will go by faster than you think.

Brightest Blessings,
