Does the doctor have the right to stop my pescription of Diazepam?!

Question: God I have been suffering from really bad anxiety, since my Grandad died, also illness too. So Ive had alot to deal with. Before christmas I was getting alot of chest pain travelling down the arm, the tests are still on going and no results yet, symptoms are still there, playing with my body, playing with my mind. Also my abdomin is swollen and doesnt feel right, I get muscle spasms, and the pain Im getting from my neck up through my ear to my head is unbelievable pain to describe. I was given a small dose of 2mg Diazepam to take 3 times a day, which helped relieve some of the symptoms, especially muscle cramps, and anxiety. My doctor stopped pescibing them to me, and for last three days I have felt extremly Ill, symptoms ten times worse and Im getting visual disturbances. Does a Doctor have to pescribe this medication or can you buy it over the counter, I hate going to the doctors and hospitals, I think its because I get so anxious. In vicious circle of anxiety.

Vambo the fourth is right. Valium(Diazepam) is highly addictive, I know I had a habit of taking 50 pills a day. Yes 50! I was an addict for 24 years. I started out like you 'not feeling well'-& then after a few months my doctor wouldn't give it to me anymore, because it is no good in the long-term. It is only useful in the very short-term. But I 'needed' it to cope. My tolerence built up rapidly & I needed more & more to get the same effect. I went to another doctor, then another & another until I became a highly experienced 'doctor shopper'. I had a different doctor every day & used to rotate around the area, the doctors weren't aware that I was seeing other doctors. Until I got a letter from the authorities saying they were aware of what I was doing & each doctor had been informed, then NO-ONE would give me anything! I would have died if I went cold turkey from 50 a day. I was placed under the care of 1 psychiatrist & placed on a 7 month reduction regime, then went to a detox centre to get off it for good. Followed by 18 months of rehab & therapy. It was absolute physical & psychological hell. Atleast a heroin addict can get over withdrawals within a week, valium is worse. DON"T GO THERE. I also lost permanent custody of my children to the authorities in the process, I'm actually studying a Counselling Diploma & Drug & Alcohol work cert IV & even though I've turned my life around, I'm still fighting to get my kids back-I'm only allowed to see them once a month for 2 hours. You need to think of long-term consequences not just short-term satisfaction.

Diazepam is a viciously addictive drug, and the withdrawal symptoms are widely regarded as being worse than heroin withdrawals. You're better off without it.

There's a forum here, I have no idea if it's any good or not, I'm afraid, just found it. You have my sympathy, I thought I was going to die. I didn't though! Good luck, it WILL pass eventually.

You're going through withdrawal. It's nothing nice. But your doctor was wrong to just stop prescribing an anti-anxiety medication that needs to be carefully decreased in dosage. This is why you feel ill. I would say see another doctor asap.

yes

I agree with the first answerer, you are going thru withdrawal. Medicare's drug plan won't even pay for benzodiazepines (incl. diazepam) because of this.

Call up your doc and ask for advice. but I would quit that drug if I were you. It is bad news. It only helps for a couple weeks, then you get used to it and only THINK it is helping. People will swear up and down it is helping. But when researchers evaluate groups of patients, the pills are not helping anymore with sleep or anxiety.

I went thru this too, and thought ativan (lorazepam, another benzo) was helping, and it was not.

Most docs don't like prescribing Diazepam as they believe they are addictive, i was offered them but refused and decided to take an SSRI called Citalopram, it's not an instant effect like the Diazepam but you get there in the end and it lasts after u reduce them unlike Diazepam, when u reduce them the panic returns, docs aren't obliged to prescribe and they are not over counter available.

Your problems your having may be symptoms from your medication as to why your doctor as stopped them.as too maybe how your feeling now may also symptoms from coming off them.sorry no you can't buy them over counter.

Diazepam (Valium) can be addictive, so I suppose that may be the reason your doctor stopped prescribing it to you. It cannot be purchased over the counter.

I can only suggest you see another doctor, since it doesn't sound as if this one is helping much. Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but there is only so much medical help one can get from Y!A.

Maybe he tooked you off the medicine for your own good. If you feel he should'nt have taken you off of it get a second opinion. Ask him why he stop prescribing you the medicine.

Your doctor is wrong diazapam is a highly addictive benzo diazapine you should be weaned off it or you will suffer withdrawal symptons which is what you are enduring,

I delighted that your doctor has stopped this inappropriate medication. It cannot of course be purchased over the counter and is only advised for short term use. Many good doctors never prescribe this drug now as it is so addictive, choosing instead to manage anxiety by non-pharmacological means, usually counselling.

Yes, doctors have the right to do whatever they want when it comes to prescriptions. diazepam is only for short term use because it is extremely addictive, and your symptoms seem to prove you're going through w/d symptoms. You could try other less addictive anxiety meds like BuSpar or klonopin, your doc might be more willing to give them to you.

anxiety makes you think you are ill & has many triggers for panic attacks & when the triggers are all exhausted your mind them creates a few more like the pains down ur right arm, i beat anxiety using a very small dose of propranolol & support from my family & my friends making me feel guilty so i went out with them, the worst part about the battle is its you against you so your going to have to out smart yourself & ignore some potentially fatal symptoms to get over your anxiety it sounds crazy & probably is but its the only way out of this self made prison!!!

if your in the uk you are allowed it for upto 4 weeks, after then not. I dont kn ow if its the law but it is what doctors are advised to do by the government.

When stopping any medication, you usually get side effects, these will get worse for a few days before dyeing down and going away.

Your doctor will have a duty of care and if you go back and explain how you are feeling and all the symptoms and fears, you should get some help with it all.

I would recommend therapy- the talking type, but also look at alternative therapies such as accupuncture which are known to be great for withdrawal syptoms such as what you have.

You cannot buy any benzodiadapene (such as diazapam) over the counter, they are very addictive and this is why they are only given out on prescription.

no u cant but that over the counter it has to be prescribe .as this medicine is very addicte they only like to prescribe it in short periods go bk and see them they can give u different ones good luck
