There Was A Shooting At My University Today?!

Question: I am totally serious, the shooting that took place was at the university i currently attend. I am wondering about my risk of developing PTSD. I was on campus when it happened, although like 1/2 a mile away. I didn't see any victims, i didn't hear any gun shots, i didn't see any blood, i didn't see anyone freaking out, i didn't even see any police. I just heard about it, so i left. I am a psychology student (so i know the warning signs of it) and a senior, i live with my parents. It is shocking but right now i feel ok. I feel shocked and angry but not afraid. I dont' feel like i was or will be in any danger. I'm generally not a very anxious person and not a person who dwells on things. Am i at high risk for developing PTSD or should i be ok?

Your campus will offer counseling, you should know that being a psychology student. I hope they are offering it-they should?

* poor gal answered here, sorry for peoples rudeness, PTSD, is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I have PTSD and sought therapy for years, and there are triggers that set it off again and again w/ or w/o medications. PTSD was first named after war veterans returned from far off lands traumatized from the killings, that never recovered from them/what they saw and experienced. The people who survived the twin towers have PTSD, a plane flying low could set them off into a panic. Mine is from several underlying causes, and as a good friend of mine on q and a (Sid) asked a question about it also last week, it is a mind thing that effects your body and brain, you can't shut if off, and you sure don't want it on, or re-live it anymore. I had several traumatizing events take place in my life that will forever haunt me, nothing like a POW (prisoner of war) and BTW they would all suffer from PTSD. But you witnessed nothing, heard nothing, I think stress will be a big thing, and seeing the counselor on a as needed basis would be a good idea, but I don't see/think from the information you provided that you are or will be suffering from PTSD, but we are not doctors and if you feel ill or start having terrible thoughts seek medical help.
I had a friend that came back from Saudi and ever time he heard popping like fireworks, he went nuts, and jumped under a table or anything that was around, he had to use ear plugs and sleep medications on the 4th of July and new Years, because he literally re-lived his event over seas. My ex has it too, and saw bodies burning alive over in the war, people screaming for help, the enemies, and he had to watch, was not allowed to treat them only US soldiers, I saw the pictures, it was very graphic.

Shooting at the school, I think emotional and stressful more likely, if you were not at the scene, but counseling is a good idea.
And please tell me why rude people even bother answering questions hatefully? why bother? You know peoples feelings do get hurt! They ask because they want a answer not a attack on their question or their being.
Be nice or don't say anything, take your 2 points over to polls and surveys! Real people-real feelings! Also asker since you are a Senior congratulations on your up-coming graduation!

wow, I read the article today for the first time, really sorry about that and everyone at the school. did you know those people? Plese see a counselor, it can only help not hurt-It is so sad!

Yeah I heard about that. Thats crazy. But I think you should be ok, if it was going to affect you, you would know it by now.

your nothing more than a drama queen. People lost lives, families will never be the same! its not about you , get over yourself

I'm pretty sure you are okay because you didn't see anything really bad but I would recommend that you see a psychiatrist just in case.

whats ptsd?
oi! your all minusing this!! it isnt my fault no one will tell me wot a word means.. :(

This is just my personal opinion - but it wouldn't bother me if I didn't see it happen. You should be fine - and if you weren't, you should be able to realize yourself.

You will be ok you need to be there for others that witnessed some of the violence. Don't think of your self think how you can help others and it will be ok.

Only women would feel shocked, angry, and susceptible to PTSD from something like this. Men would find situations like this exhilarating and adrenaline-inducing.

Gee's how awful...sorry to hear about that, and am hoping everyone concerned will be okay! PTSD can affect anyone differently, but to address your concerns, it would be a good idea to speak to a professional to be properly assessed if you seem overwhelmed by this situation. Wishing you and all at your University comfort while coping through this difficult time. Thanks for asking.
