Ari's answer is great. I'm an emotional comfort eater too and for me the big thing was to learn to distinguish between cravings and appetite. Before something goes in your mouth, think about why you are eating, is it for comfort/boredom or are you really hungry? If its a comfort related craving, find another way to cope, like going for a walk or writing down your feelings or talking to a close friend.

You'll find regular rountine of walking for an hour everyday is a great way to shift the weight and will after a few weeks also help improve your mood in general.

Why don't you start to write your feelings down... maybe it'll take away your problems...

replace the bad habit with a good one. When you feel the urge to eat emotionally stop and do something else- write it down- walk around the block (exercise releases endorphins just like the carbs do) find something to replace the food.

You need ot find a friend to comfort you and find another activity to do when you are sad such as exercise or watch a movie

You need to try comfort in another way. Maybe go for a walk to clear your mind. Find a hobby.
You are in control of your life now. Shop for healthy food in case you get an urge to snack.
Also like the other poster stated maybe write down your thoughts and feelings in a journal.

i'm 16 And weigh a lot more...like 250. so im starting a "diet". whenever i get hungry i grab a water, stick of gum, and go for a long walk until im not hungry anymore. i'm really hoping its going to work.

Replace your bad habit with a good habit. Like a hobby or something. Find something that would replace your bad habit.

first: dont ever stock any needless food in your house. aside from what you will need for the 3-4 meals a day, dont stock any unhealthy food. (vegetables are fine because they dont make you gain weight) ---because even if you are not sad, you will tend to want to eat the food becuase it is right in front of you. i should know, because it is what my mom does to make me eat more since im too thin.

i suggest that when you're sad, try go watch a movie with your friends but dont go buying that popcorn and large softdrinks. you could also go the bars... or sweat your sadness out in the gym!

but you know, nothing beats talking to your best friend or your mother or anyone close to you. Try crying it all out in a church or any religious place you go to. Sometimes, talking to yourself and to a higher Being will help you a lot.

good luck!

Why not go to a counselor or therapist to get your feelings out on the table and find other ways to deal with your stress, maybe exercise instead...
