Does anyone else find facebook (or myspace, etc) depressing?!

Question: I'm not having the best of times at the moment, in fact, I'm battling with depression. I am doing as many things as I can to keep myself as busy as possible (yahoo answers is a good start!) for the foreseeable future until things can get sorted.

However, I have found facebook is not helping. You get constant bombardment about how great everyone's lives are going, and pictures come up in the newsfeed so you can't even really ignore them. And don't get me started on statuses.

So yesterday I decided to leave, I deactivated my account. But within 12 hours, I had 9 emails from people going "Where have you gone on facebook?". Funny, these people have never contacted me before. It takes leaving one silly website, and they are all "worried". Is this what society has come to?

Anyway, just wondering if anyone found social network sites depressing, even if you aren't officially depressed, just normal! I find they are very narcissistic too in some cases. Or am I turning crazy? :p

Facebook and those sort of websites are full of people who come online to escape the dullness of their lives. If their life was really as exciting as most people claim, how on earth would they find the time to get their profile updated so often.

If you want my advice, find people who share the same interests. Yahoo!Groups are great and you can choose the settings so others don't see your email address, meaning they can't email you if you decide to leave, unless you personally gave them your address.

I've met some really good friends this way in a rough period in my own life, and now (5 years later), we're still in contact and I've even met a few of them in RL.

Hope that helps and that you feel better soon!

You have to remember that these people are full of crap. Their lives suck just as much as you think yours does, it's just they are better at putting spin on it. I get it too, all about the ski holidays and new cars but it's all the same old nonsense. Just focus on getting better and being happy and forget the rest.

No, I find them not only depressing, but also a pointless waste of life.
It's just basically a popularity contest, in the stupidest way. A place for people to contact 'old friends' or whatever, and just prove to them how "cool and popular" they are, judging by how many photos they have of themselves getting plastered.

It's definitely not a nice community, I just go on it if I'm completely bored and desperate. Even then I have better things to do.

Sorry for the rant!

You're not crazy. I'm not on either of them, and like the fact that I am not. It's too easy to get sucked into sites that really only serve to feed egos.

oh yes absloutley, I'm 28 years old.

I love yahoo answers, unlike myspace

Myspace is completely phony, Most of the poeple onn their friends list, they have never met in real life or they knew them many years back.

I have a myspace which i'd like to close and i am in little or mostly no contact with the people on my friends list.

people also lie about what they have been up to,

Just like a high school reunion

Just close the facebook and myspace and forget that bullshit and things will get better.

personally i would stay away from "facebook" and myspace, my daughters aren't allowed on them either, they have been nothing but a nusince (sp) in their lives....you are better off dealing with "real" people!! good luck! try to keep busy exercizing/reading something like that....

I tried ' face book ', or should that be paperback, found it, not that impressive, OK some parts weren't bad, but on the whole
it was not for me. Yahoo is not a social site but you get
some good comebacks to your questions, cheers me up.

Myself and my husband deactivated our accounts, it is a pointless, nasty waste of time and I think it a huge troublemaker in peoples' lives. A big show and tell competition. Don't even ask me how many problems it caused for me, I am so glad to be out of it!

Hi, yeh I do know what you mean with people posting pictures of their nights out and all their mates they hang out with. But on the other side, I love myspace and facebook. It does take my mind off my problems (for some of the time). I always see who is new on facebook that I know. Inow have 182 friends and it is a good buzz when more friends are added. lol. I'm 21 and when everyone posted pictures of their 21st birthdays and having a great time, I was at home slashing my wrists on my 21st. Great life hey.lol.

No, your not turning crazy atall. I think it was a good thing that you closed/ got rid of your facebook account. Sometimes you can become too involved in peoples lives on these sort of sites and also may feel bad about your own (eg. social life after seing pictures or feel bad about your looks.) I think that you should atleast take abreak from visiting that site and maybe continue spending time on yahoo answers and you could also look for a hobbie. Its your decision, I wish you the best of luck x
