yeah kids that age can have depression some can feel like they dont fit in and everyone hates them. Someone could be thinking about something thats making them angry, and if they look at this kid the kid could be thinking the person doesnt like them or is mad at them about something. Im serious, it happens. And then they could be self concious about their weight, or they could think they were stupid because they are bad in a subject at school. They could be angry at their parents or their parents are just mean to them. Anyone can be depressed pretty much. I know a girl who is a student teacher for kindergarden and first grade, and she said there is this 5 year old in her class who is a bully and when she pulls him aside to talk to him about something he does he always says he hates his life and he wants to die. This is a 5 year old! I would think that would have more to do with his parents not treating him like they should because 5 year olds shouldnt have those thoughts. It would be nice to send a kid to counceling. If the kid constantly complained that they had to go say, they would say that they felt like something was wrong with them and they hated going to counceling, it wouldnt be better to take them out because nothing would change. I know this first hand. Hope it helped a little...

yea, you can have depression earlier then that. My sister had severe depression around that age which led all the way to her early twenties, she's finally slowly getting over it but it takes a lot of venting, counseling, good support system, a social network. And if you can try and get yourself out of or away from the source of the depression, whatever that may be.

i dnt know much about it but i think i hav it. im 16 nd i recently broke up wit my gf. i am always in my room, nt eatin, jus sleepin, doin bad at stuff i was good at, etc. it is possible to get it. maybe even hereditary

its possible to have depression usually at 7 and above i would say. it will probably be a major or lower depressive episode. you will probably have experienced some serious change in appetite/sleep. i'm sorry if you're going through this right now. however, there is help. like others have said, therapy is an option, as well as counseling and support groups. all these sort of thing can help you.

Yes, even young children can have depression.

Diagnosis of clinical depression in children is more difficult than in adults and is often left undiagnosed, and thus untreated, because the symptoms in children are often written off as normal childhood moodiness. Diagnosis is also made difficult because children are more likely than adults to show different symptoms depending on the situation.

While some children still function reasonably well, most who are suffering depression will suffer from a noticeable change in their social activities and life, a loss of interest in school and poor academic performance, and possibly drastic changes in appearance. They may also begin abusing drugs and/or alcohol, particularly past the age of 12. Although much rarer than in adults, children with major depression may attempt suicide or have suicidal thoughts even before the age of twelve.

At-risk individuals may also be placed in a partial hospitalization therapy, in which the patient sleeps at home but spends most of the day in a psychiatric hospital setting. This intensive treatment usually involves group therapy, individual therapy, medication management, and is used often in the case of children and adolescents.
