Is there anyone here who was a cutter - or knew of a cutter back in the 60's!
Question: Is cutting a new thing to do - or has it been around for a long time and I just never heard of it? When I was a teen - I didn't know of anybody doing such a thing. I just heard about cutting about 6 or 7 years ago - and it seems to be mostly young people who do it. Thoughts?

I used to cut back in the 70s when I was in high school. I got the idea from a girl I went out with who did the same thing. I know of at least two other people who did it around that time.
A lot of primitive cultures have some sort of body mutilation ritual. Even animals do it sometimes; I used to have a dog who would chew on his own front paw until it bled. I have heard of parrots that pluck out their own feathers when their owners don't give them enough attention.
I think it's been around since the beginning of time. People are just talking about it more now than they used to.
My mother did it in the 70s.
If you look back on history, self-injury has always existed, way back into the middle ages, but I think the media has made it seem "cool." I think this is why we get all these school shootings too. Because people get attention, and it really is ridiculous.
I think there are some people who are genuinely sad when they do it, but you also have to deal with the whole "emo" scene who glorifies self-injury.
I started when I was 12 and have off and on my entire life, its been around for quite a while. Here check this out.

It's always existed, that's how the new generation heard about it in the first place, because people did it decades ago but kept their mouths shut. It wasn't as rampant as it is now, no, but it did exist.
My best friend's mom was a "cutter" She cut herself for 9years She started in the 70s
