What is a mental illness, and can it be cured with medication?!

Question: There are more diagnosed mental conditions now than ever, and more addictive are drugs being handed out everywhere. Were people in the eighties unable to keep their composure without xanax?
I had a friend on Lithobid, and he could never get off them. He is completely dependent on the pills to function. I've been going a little crazy lately, and it doesn't as simple as the FDA has told us. It seemed like many brain immaturity's end up catching up with the rest of the person's peers.

well...yeah it is true a lot more people are becoming diagnosed with a mental disorder. it's mostly from people getting together and making little babies when both of their families have a history of mental disorders. then there are some idiots who act like they have something wrong with them just to get medicine.

some people get addicted to medicine because they choose to take more then the prescribed amount. your friend probably took more than one a day or something....i take adderall for my adhd and i have for a year. i never take more than one a day. i was also one ritalin for 6 years, never dependent on that. concerta for a year also, never addicted.
mental disorders do not have a cure.
maybe...you have ADD. cause obviously, if your brain isnt maturing as fast as others, you have a learning problem.

oh and not everyone takes xanax. it's only prescribed to people with severe anxiety. but if you go to a regular doc, they don't really know anything so they give people that rather than other antidepressants.

its funny how the stress level of people sky rocketed with the mental illness..

If your friend is on Lithobid (Lithium), he has bipolar disorder. He is not addicted to Lithium, he is addicted to not going insane. Lithium has been used for this purpose since before the 1950s and it has kept us out of mental institutions since then. Sorry, wrong med to pick on.

Addictive medications are those that require more and more to achieve the same effect. You are right about Xanax and Ativan. Antidepressants, however, are not addictive and they have saved many from suicide and painfully depressed lives.

Personally, I think you may be misinformed about mental illnesses and the use of psych meds. Mental illnesses have always been with us. We just were locked away where society couldn't see us. With medication we are able to live normal lives. I will give you that many doctors rush to meds instead of therapy for some more minor versions of depression and anxiety, but that's really more a reflection of the health care system - insurance covers doctors and meds but not therapy.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying about your own issues, so no comment there.

A mental illness is an illness that has to do with the brain, and how the brain functions. Medications can help the brain to function better, but they cannot cure a Mental Illness. Hope this helps at least a little bit.

Most time it can be treated with meds

cant necessarily be cured but it can be controled.
