What is better for depression daily exercise or anti depressants or self help bo!

Question: Actually a combination of all three would provide you with the most optimal treatment option available to you.

Answers: Actually a combination of all three would provide you with the most optimal treatment option available to you.

a mixture of the first two

Exercise absolutely.

exersice and antidepressants. some peeps swear by books but i found them pointless and preachy. hypnosis to help with posotive thinking really helped me.

a mix of all of the above

Exercise and pills work.

Exercise works very well for me, but I have seen a therapist and a pyschiatrist for ten years. The exercise boosts you immediately. The meds help over the long haul. The therapy helps you understand and grow.

Every person is different and each depression is different. Most people respond to exercise and a good antidepressant, plus psycho-therapy. I would go to a doctor and try an anti-depressant. There are tons of them out there now; unfortunately, most have side-effects.

I would say exercise and it helps me a lot,try it and let us know.

It's 'horses for courses' in my opinion. It depends on the the cause of your depression, your own personality and the severity of your illness as to what will work for you.

For people who are perhaps feeling a little 'blue' then exercise, perhaps some food supplements if they are run down and a decent book based on psychological techniques (rather than strictly, self help) can be of benefit.

If your depression is due to a severe chemical inbalance or you are at the point when helping yourself no longer works, therapy of some kind or antidepressants are necessary. Once the person is back on track, they can sometimes learn more healthy ways of thinking and feeling.

try walking, jogging plus take vit e

Certainly forget the anti-depressants - they're a recipe for disaster. I really mean that. I've seen it happen.
Both exercise and learning about the condition will help but in the end, it all comes down to you personally.

Going for a walk is brilliant as you have to pass people and places this will stop your mind going back to how you feel even if it is for half an hour and it will make you feel more relaxed take care

Exercise! don't take pills, they are very hard to get off and doctors hand them out like sweets, unless you are suicidal then there is no real need for them, exercise every day, dance whatever you enjoy and set yourself goals to give you something to look forward to

there are pros and cons. Anti depressant instant worry gone, but you get depended into it. It doesnt help you eliminate the source it only helped you to trim down your depression. Then when it get worst you would need to take higher dosage right? Daily exercise? hmmm if you can mantain the habit then why not. Self help books is good its educational, but it wont answer your question when u dont understand. You could try the doc, or eat multi vitamin tablets like i do. You could try talking to people coz it will make you feel good, especially sharing your worries. God i love answering questions about mental health.

I believe exercise, and optimum diet.

In more severe cases self-help might be effective, to address self-defeating habits, but in my experience it can make a person more introspective.

Antidepressants can be very helpful, but are not a panacea. I've taken antidepressants for years, but feel better wehn I also take good diet, fresh air and exercise.

Stay away from antidepressants!!!!! The billion dollar drug industry heavily markets them because they are huge moneymakers. However, they are full of side effects that will give you additional problems you didn't have to begin with. Additionally, take a look at these websites:

http://www.antidepressantsfacts.com/laws... (people who have committed crimes because of antidepressants)

http://www.antidepressantsuicide.com/ (drug companies found out that antidepressants caused suicide in some people and hid the research, how nice of them)

My advice to you is this. Do things that will be good for your body and mind. Exercise. Read inspirational books that will motivate you to achieve your dreams and aspirations. Spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself. Get rid of whatever it was in your life that caused you to be depressed. If you're not sure, go to a therapist and talk things out. Sometimes the underlying cause is not obvious and takes some digging to find. Stay away from drugs and people in your life who cause hurt and pain.

Best of luck to you.

excercise and if that doesnt work- citalopram (anti depressant) worked wonders for me. but still keep at the excercising

If you ever start depending on drugs to save you , you will always need them , and your liver will have to fight the rest of your life to flush out the poisin that your body is now depending on ,, Exresise will give you a strong heart and the heart is your servival,,, keep it strong , and talk to people who have been threw it and they can guide you out ..

that depends how bad your depression is daily exercise is good but you may need antidepressants for a sort time you can have not addictive ones

I think it depends on how severe it is. Some depression is natural and healthy; i.e. when someone close to you dies, or when you are out of a job. However, when depression seems to hang on for a long time with no sign of relief regardless of how much exercise you get, then it's time to see a therapist, and maybe get medicated.

i wouldnt agree with pills, they will give a dependancy. hey do not cure the actually problem, they only relive the symptoms.

exercise releives stress so that works...

i perosnaly think talking to peoplewill also help ...

a problem shared is a problem halfed!

For people with mild depression, exercise is the best cure. However, if your depression is serious, then medication is really what you need. Self-help books and counselling also help to some extent but at the end, it's your will power, a wholesome diet and a healthy lifestyle that are going to lift you out of the depths of your depression.

You have been asking questions about depression for quite some time. I hope you're going to make an appointment to see your family GP and get some help.

I think it depends on your serverity of depression. Obviously if your majorly depressed than exercise just isnt going to happen and therefore antidepressants are needed. Once you get on top of things and feeling more motivated you can than add in exercise; after all.. trisha recomends it!!

I find that talking to my psychortherapist helps the most, by far.

I found anti depressents help keep me from getting too low but are not a cure and are hard if not impossible to come off.

Self help books have not helped me in the slightest, I just find them patronising and I generally feel like I am being put into a box and labelled which I naturally rebell against, thus making the book useless. I do like to read about psychological ideas though, that interest me and the insite can sometimes help.

Daily excercise is wonderful- I dont mean the gym stuff, yeam that helps a little bit bit not realy as much as classes, which get me dancing, sharing jokes and talking to other people, all of which improve my mood vastley.

5htp has worked for my depression. Far better than the prescribed rot from the so called doctor.
