The prevalence rate (the number of people who are affected at any given moment) of depression in the United States is about 5.3%, or 14.4 million:

Edit:

Without trying to sound like I'm trying to put down hxllywxxd_died with her answer, since it is a good piece of information about how widespread emotional illness is in the United States, not all people on antidepressants are depressed. Many antidepressants, particularly SSRIs, are prescribed for other problems as well, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, PTSD, various personality disorders, etc. Additionally, many people who take antidepressants for depression wouldn't meet the DSM-IV criteria at the moment for depression, but since they have a history of the illness, they remain on medication to prevent relapse.

To the best of my knowledge, the numbers I gave are the prevalence based on people who meet the DSM-IV criteria at any given time in the U.S.

It has been said by many in the field of mental health that everyone suffers from some sort of depression. That means it doesn't causes problems for everyone either. It can be short term or long term.

This says 118 million people were on anti-depressants in 2006 http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/07/09/ant...

Hi--It is currently known that 1 in 3 people suffer (or suffered) or will suffer in their lifetime from depression.

This is a very complex question. There are no exact numbers for prevalence of depression (percentage of the population diagnosed with depression at any given moment in time) because there are at least 7 different forms of primary depression and diagnostic methods are changing over time:

Estimates for all depressive disorders combined can vary. For example, in the US, some studies show the prevalence of depression to be 8.7% (compared to 8.2% in Canada):

In Denmark (the methods of diagnosing depressive disorders differ among countries) the prevalence was found to be 3-4%:
