Question: why would my doctor give me this for bipolar? Does it cause weight gain? I need information on how it helps Bipolar? I asked but he didn't make it clear enough and my mom is going to make me start it tomorrow. I'm 15.

The side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, unsteady gait, fatigue and eye twitching.
It works by changing the chemical levels in your brain.
Gabapentin has been used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and epilepsy.
Some claim gabapentin acts as a mood stabilizer and has the advantage of having fewer side-effects than more conventional bipolar drugs such as lithium and valproic acid.

http://www.psycom.net/depression.central... At 15 you are old enough to participate in your treatment. If you or your Mom have questions they need to be answered.A good doctor will make sure of this before you leave his/her office.

Bipolar disorder is NOT a disorder or disease; it is a vitamin/mineral deficiency, w/ food allergies.
You may need extra vitamin: A, B (all of them), C, D, E, K,
Minerals: calcium, magnesium, chromium, along w/ good active T3 thyroid (for hypothyroidism, or low-thyroid).
Gabapentin (trade name: Neurontin) is usually used for seizure disorder (like Epilepsy), and causes a lot of side effects: irratability, extreme sleepyness, poor concentration, memory loss.
You also may have an allergy to: sugar, wheat, corn, milk, milk-products, soy, nuts, eggs, dust, and pollen.
Before taking anything, get a second opinion, check on the web for alternatives, and check out www.doctortalk.com (spam-free alternative-medicine site for Dr. Howard Hagglund, a well-known naturapath.)
All the best to you.
