Is it a bad idea to mix Zoloft or Seroquel with marijuana?!

Question: A friend of mine is hospitalized and being treated with the first two drugs for a severe mood/anxiety disorder. I am concerned that someone might have recently given my friend some of the third drug, in a benevolent attempt to alleviate the symptoms. I am aware of potential dangerous reactions between marijuana and benzodiazepines - however I am not sure about marijuana and other psychoactive drugs. Anyway, some signs I have that this might be the case for my friend are (recent changes): auditory allucinations, short-term memory interruption (not loss, I think), paranoia, extreme irritability and mood swings, violent outbursts (punching, kicking), and a general lack of self control. It could perhaps be degeneration due to progressing mental illness, but since these changes have subsided somewhat in the past few days, without any change in treatment, it may be something else. Also, Ritalin was briefly administered at some point, but that might be another question. Sources please!

Your friend could be Bipolar...Almost all those symptoms relate to it. Seroquel is a Prescription used to treat it! Ritalin is a drug used to treat ADHD patients, and can actually make Bipolar worse. To answer your question...Yes! Mixing any types of drugs, medication, or prescriptions without a physicians consent can be very dangerous...if not deadly. I only know this because I have the disease, and have mixed these things before. Either way...your a great friend for bring concerned...just tell your friend of the dangers and just be there for him/her.

I think they work on different receptor sites in the brain. If someone has anxiety they shouldn't be smoking that stuff anyway.

marijuana will cause the problems you are talking about. The mental illness may be progressive, but the marijuana will only make it worse.

I worked in mental health since 1987. I never heard a psychiatrist who said it was okay to smoke pot and take any psychiatric medication. Most psychiatrists I know will stop seeing a patient if they find out he or she is using illegal drugs. I have heard psychiatrists refer to drug abusers as "a waste of time" because they "sabotage their treatment."

It could also be the side effects of the pot... long term marijuana use can definately cause and worsen some of the symptoms you have described.
