Why Does My Brother Steal?!

Question: My brother does not live at home with us and holds 2 jobs, has 3 cars. Now, when he comes to our home on the weekends he'll take $$$, gift cards, our expensive stainless steel trash can!, and my mother's& brother's jewelry, and things will go missing without a trace, and we find he is going inside and out throughout the whole house and things are out of place.
He also holds garage sales at his girlfriend's house and comes and STEALS stuff out of ours.
My mother has told him not to take anything that does not belong to him, and he is verybally, and abusive to the hilt to all of us if confronted. This has been going on for years and my mother cries and cries and refuses to have the locks changed.

Is my mother stupid or the brother who steals? Or both.
Please help. Because his stealing is out of control. And he is crazy when asked if he takes our stuff.

Unfortunately you said he has been doing this for years.
He is selling things to get money.
I think your mother should not allow him in the house.
For sure she should change the locks.
He is taking advantage of you. If your mother is having a problem handling the situation, she could benefit from getting professional help. Good Luck

sorry to hear it.... he might have a drug addiction

i think he just feels like that is his mom and dads house and why go and buy stuff when he can steal it from them? ur mom puts up with it so he is just gonna keep doing it. i think it boils down to greed. he's rather take your guises stuff than spend his own money cause thats more cheaper... basically you guys are getting punk'd to put it bluntly... and until ur mom reports that mess or changes the locks its not gonna change... especially since he seems abusive about it like his right...

I had a sister who stole(and still does), but she was not verbally abusive to our mother. I think that part is something that's in them.
As far as your brother is concerned: him being of abusive language and stealing your stuff I would think that he might be on drugs or bi-polar

Ouch, to me that would be a major insult to the honor in my family. If he does not have respect to the people who actually care about him, (and I know because this is a serious question.) Then it would be tough to have him stop. If I where you I would find a way to buying a safe or leaving some of my stuff at a friends house. And I would also lose my temper and start a violent fight with my brother, (thankfully I'm not in that situation for that reason.) I would report him to the authorities if I did not want to use violence. Yet I do not know exactly what your situation is, so I am not the best judge for this.

Stealing in itself can be an addiction. I think it was Wynona Rider (celebrity) that has a stealing addiction. She has money, but still felt she had to steal.

He could also have a drug addiction. Either way, talk to him about getting help.
