Mixing up words / letters of words while speaking?!

Question: The title pretty much says it all. I have been having this issue of mixing up words / letters while speaking. I'm not sure exactly how long it has been going on, but recently it seems like it is happening a lot more.

Does anyone know what this might be caused from or ways to help it occur less often?

I would start by making a doctor's appointment to see what he/she recommends. Try to make a list of what's going on to bring to the appointment. There may be an underlying medical condition that you're unaware of. As someone else said, there could suddenly be a neurological explanation, you may also need to be tested for dyslexia, or adult ADHD/ADD, there's a myriad of possibilities hence making journal entries after you notice that you are doing this may help locate triggering items that cause this. Perhaps you're under additional stress and/or your mind has become too preoccupied subconsciously. It's worth finding out as there could be something else going on physically. Good luck.

well it's pretty normal...to a point...
If you do it when you're excited, nervous, in a hurry etc. than it's pretty much normal. But if you do it for no reason and you do it when you're reading and writing, it could be dyslexia.

well when I was younger I came up with a pattern for the alphabet, pairs if you will. a and z, b and y, c and x, and so on. sometimes when I write I'll meen to write garage and I'll put something like tzage (t and z match up with g and a). just drill into your head to put say and write the right letters I suppose. good luck!

think of your eyes what you see is actually upside down . and the left side controls the right . if that dos not make sense then im the wrong guy to explain it to you

your best bet is to see a speech therapist my little brother and I both suffered from it when we were younger I grew out of it but he did have to see a speech therapist. it is just an unconcious mis match in word association. It can be solved easily with the correct help, or find try making cards and with pictures or sentences running through them and working on the ones in which when you say what is in the picture or repeat the sentence. once you get them down you will notice a difference in the way you pronounce the words and the easier they will flow out.

Does it happen more or less when you cover one eye? You may be dealing with dyslexia.

It sounds like you might benefit from having a neurological examination. You should ask your primary physician about this problem and possibly get a referral to a neurologist. Your problem could be indicative of brain dysfunction.

Are you on any medications? Certain psych meds can cause the problem you describe (in my experience lithium and lamictal did)...it is possible that other medications could also be the culprit.
