Songs ALWAYS in my head?!

Question: i have a song playing in my head ALL the time, and i was wondering if that happens to anybody else? it's not just the ocasional song that gets stuck in your head for like an hour, but this has been going on for as long as i can remember. i can sometimes change the song, but i can never silence it... sometimes it can be really frustrating if i'm taking a test and there is a song (or a single line of a song) playing over and over.

oh yeah, sometimes instead of a song i'll have a random word (such as the word cataracts, which was stuck in my head a couple weeks ago...)

is this really strange? or does this happen to more people than i think? i heard somewhere that it's a form of OCD, is that true?

thank you so much if you can help me. i've been wondering this for a really long time.

I'll have a song go on in my head for as long as a year or more. Also, the constant ringing in my ears used to drive me nearly insane until I just learned to cope with it, as it wasn't going away. Sometimes these songs are there to help us get over something, like the subconscious is trying to get our attention to deal with something). Sometimes they are just there because it was the last song and we, as naturally creative people, with particular bents toward the synthesis and symmetry/perfect organic nature of music, will naturally hold onto it as a way to help our organization and problem solving skills. What I'm trying to say is, don't really fight it, because, although it can be quite annoying at times, who else do you know can recite the song, or the music itself, verbatim? Hmm? That's right, very few. I know that I've also read, in webmd.com for example, that this is a form of OCD and has possible connections with extreme high functioning Autism/Aspergers syndrome, but the jury is still out on that.

The words getting stuck in your head, have similar roles to play, like music. Perhaps, when you get a word stuck like that, write it down (in fact, carry a journal to write in and write the songs down too) and then when you have time, find out its meaning, uses in language, context, etc. You will find that this is your mind's way of alerting you to some new areas of growth you are experiencing, or to help you cope with traumatic issues currently facing you).

best of success.

It does look like OCD to me, is it mostly the same song? what does this song mean to you? does it remind you of something?
some people with autism have reported this too , I think a visit with a professional might help.

I'm cursed or blessed with this same symptom (walking around trying to ignore the music in my head.) If it's OCD or even if it's tinnitus, there may be medications your doctor can give you. Since medicines always have some sort of side effect, you might try embracing the music. Consider it your own personal radio station. When you get sick of the song and can't change it, ask a friend or family member to suggest a new tune. Hope this helps.
