Do I have a sleeping disorder? Am I hurting myself by not sleeping?!

Question: So in high school I would often stay up late working on homework, but I would always end up falling asleep while working on it. I averaged about 4 hours of sleep per night. I pulled all- nighters about twice a year (maybe?).

Anyways, now I'm in college...and it's even worse! I pull about 3 or 4 all-nighters per month, and generally get about 5 hours of sleep per night. I am always tired, I sleep through most of my lecture classes (not my studios), and sometimes I will take short naps during the day. (On the weekends, I usually sleep for 10 hours each night.)

Recently, I've pulled several all-nighters in a row to work on projects, but I am completely able to stay awake. It's like my body has become accustomed to staying awake. I feel like crap, but I just want to know if I'm doing serious damage to my body or my mind by not sleeping enough.

Some of us are awful at going to bed when we're tired. I'm one of them.... so I know (to a lesser degree) what you're talking about. The truth is, you are tired (you doze off, you sleep for 10 hours when you can), so you know you're not getting enough sleep. While you're young, your body and mind will probably bounce back for quite a while, but in the long run you run the risk of mental and/or physical problems. I wouldn't worry over-much about this, but I would suggest you don't do your all-nighters very often - and several in a row really is a bad idea.

What is so hard to get hold of, for owls like you and me, is that actually you get more work done if you get more sleep and above all more regular sleep. It's taken me quite a long time to work this out and although I'm fit and well (and a good deal older than you), I do now know that the world is much more difficult to deal with when I've not had enough sleep. If you can just try to be a bit more balanced about this now, it will serve you well in the long run.

yes you are, your putting alot of strain on yourself and stress and its not good for your heart or your mental health. you should have about 7 hours sleep a night at the minamine

Check out bi polar web site or you may need to get yourself on a regular sleeping schedule

not really. if u can stay awake then theres nothing wron.g trust me, this is GREAT preperation for kids! :D

Lack of sleep can be extremely dangerous (contrary to popular belief). Your immune system will weaken, thus becoming sick more easily. Also, when your body lacks REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement - when you dream) you can become ill, lose brain cells, end up in the hospital.

... sleep is something we all need, some people function fine with 5 hours, others need at least 8.... I would suggest forcing yourself to get at least 6 a night. Everyone has to pull an all nighter occasionally, but you need to make up for it by catching up on some z's the following nights.
