My brother has killing on his mind, psychiatric help?!

Question: my younger brother has a history of aggression. but now it has gotten worse. me and my family are worried and concerned. he is married and has a week old baby girl. last night he doused his and her clothes with oil?! also, he always threatens to kill her over petty arguments. but this is the final straw and he needs psychiatric help. he admitted to my mom this morning that he is afraid of his own actions. he has no health insurance, and mental help will obviously cost. any feedback will be appreciated.

his safety & everyone else's safety is the main concern here. he needs help & no insurance is not excuse to let him continue to walk around dousing clothing w/oil & threatening to kill.....you need to encourage him to CHECK HIMSELF IN somewhere. they will hold him 72 hrs & evaluate him regardless of if he has insurance or not. when they see that he is a risk they will hold him longer. in the meantime i'd contact a counselor & seek out more info in your state about getting help for someone mentally ill that has no insurance. there may be some programs that can help.

anger manangement and pyciatrist

call the police they can have him admitted to a hospital for a 72 hour hold because he is a threat to himself and his family, if he needs to be in longer they will make arrangements for that. He needs help and he needs to be off the streets for his and his families sake. hope this helps.

GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!!!
ps i'll say a prayer for your family

many states have a spend down option, where if you spend so much on medical care that your income is down below a certain threshhold, the state will then pay thru their medicaid program.

In this case, I think you should be sure he gets inpatient treatment, insurance or no. Right away, as in go to the ER of a community hospital that has an inpatient psych unit. I have bipolar disorder, and have been on 72 hour holds in the hospital and stuff, so I don't say it lightly, that he needs to go inpatient, money or not.

If the family has to file bankruptcy, they will still have their home and a semi-decent car. If they have a baby girl, they probably don't have many assets to lose anyhow. I went thru bankruptcy, and it wasn't the end of the world, not really that big a deal honestly (except for the shame, but it was because mental health wasn't covered by insurance). Also, if the hospital sends an outrageous bill, that can be negotiated down by at least 1/3.

If the baby had a hole in her heart and insurance didn't cover it, would the family sacrifice to pay for that? Getting care for what is wrong with him is as important as that. He should't be left alone with his wife or his baby. He already knows he has a problem, it is up to your family and his wife's family to relieve the stress here and keep an eye on him, until you get him inpatient, which is an emergency, in my opinion. After he gets out, I would also give him a lot of supervision & help with stressful things. Often stress makes mental problems worse.

I know this is an awful situation for all of you, but your brother admits he needs help, and you will have to make sure he gets it.

I'd listen to DeelC - I don't know if you would be worried about it or not, but it wouldn't be betraying him (by turning him over to the police).

The very best thing anyone can do in this situation:

Call 911 - tell them what you told us -- tonight!
Call Social Services / child protection

Money or no money, he cannot be in the house with that child, and he needs to be helped.

There was a similar issue with a neighbor on my block. The child is in Foster Care, and I believe the court can order psychiatric care. When there is little or no income, Medicaid will pay for it - he'll need to apply for it.
