You need to get a door chime. This way, when she opens the door to leave, you hear it. There are several devices that you can pick up through medical supply catalogs that will also help you out.

You may also find door chimes at pool supply stores - people with swimming pools are usually required to have an alarm on a door leading to the pool. When I was in the mental hospital for bipolar disorder, there were some folks with Alzheimer's there. For some, having a big sign on doors that said "NO" worked much of the time.

Get your parents to call your city & state Depts. of Aging & ask for referrals for the things you want...like the GPS device or bracelet for her to wear that gives her name, address & your phone #s. Have it say "I'm lost". Also if she spends time alone, you might be able to get someone to stay with her for part of the time.

See if they have a referral to an agency that has visiting nurses or social workers to check in on her every so often.

Good luck to your family...it's difficult.

my friend works with alzhemires patients and they have a braclet on her if she gets too close to the door...so id call a nursing home and see where you can purchase one of those...awwwwe im sorry thats so sad....god bless yas

Just last weekend I attended a seminar. The trainer was telling us about a poster to put on the inside of your front door....
The picture is of a book case. As the person with dementia walks through the room, they don't see a door, and so they stay inside.

These ideas are really great, I just wanted to say my heart goes out to you.
