Most people don't realise themselves, it it usually a concerned relative or friend who will spot it. Talking to your GP can also help, they can spot signs quite easily and will know which questions to ask you.

I have had a breakdown resulting from abuse as a child. Symptoms - of which is called severe depression are. My ex manager told me that I was depressed:

considerable distress or agitation,
loss of self-esteem or feelings of uselessness and guilt,
They will tend to lack any desire to talk to others or to look after themselves,
They may show a great deal of restlessness and general agitation, but will not do anything constructive,
In some cases the feelings of unworthiness and self-disgust may lead sufferers to 'hear voices',
They may also believe that they have had visitations from the devil or other dark forces,
Suicidal thoughts
feel like crying
be sad and unable to enjoy life
have poor appetite
suffer either from sleeplessness or oversleeping suffer from loss of interest and pleasure in life
have difficulty making decisions and loss of concentration
be tense and irritable
have decreased interest in sex
suffer loss of self confidence and feelings of uselessness
have feelings of self blame and guilt
