Why do people smile or snigger when told someone's been sectioned?!

Question: An acquaintance friend of mine at church got sectioned a few weeks ago, and when I told my other friend this (they don't know each other by the way), she laughed.

People react to things in a way that can be involuntary.
I had some very surprising reactions for so called friends when I lost my hair to chemotherapy.Worst person was my father in law.
Just put it down to this person either having a nervous laugh, or just plain ignorance. It happens hun, try not to let it bother you.Pink x

some people laugh or smile when they are nervous but thats not nice.

maybe she thought 'there for the grace of God go I' *chuckle*

No, it's not funny and can happen to any one of us.

I agree, it isn't funny at all. I can't say why your friend laughed but I can tell you the reasons I have been given for people laughing when we have been talking about mental health and sectioning. The main reason I have been offered is either shock or nerves. Laughter is a common reaction when someone actually doesn't know how to react.

I have also had laughter explained to me as: due to not liking the person who was sectioned; relief because they though the person needed to get help; ignorance over mental health. Mainly though I think it is the nerves thing, as even if someone was callous enough to find the idea of someone being sectioned amusing, I don't think many would be rude enough to laugh in your face about it.

i think it's a self-defence thing; they're glad it's happening to someone else & not them! it really isn't funny, but mental health issues are still hidden & talked about with shame & embarrassment. i think it may be because it can happen to any of us, at any time - so it's fear as well! that's a great question; i wish more people would talk about mental illness, so that it becomes less of a taboo. morning to you, by the way! diane.

That's pretty horrible..they don't obviously know what goes on there

y did she laugh? its not nice but yet again pps dont really understand do they?unless its to do with they familys, then they ask or as i should say not just familys but anyone
