Can Prozac help Obsessive Thoughts?!

Question: I get these horrible thoughts about things going wrong in my life and I have anxiety attacks. I know I sound like a total loser but It's something I've been dealing with for about 6 years now. I think about my ex being with someone else over and over and over in my head and I havent been with him in forever. I think about failing the classes I'm taking. I think " what if my son dies?" my life would be over. And I think about these things for absolutely no reason at all. But it gets so bad I dont know what to do. I recently saw a doctor who put me on Prozac. I think it's helping some but what do you think? Has anyone else ever experienced this or know someone who has? PLZ HELP

I have a friend with OCD who is on Prozac. People that say you don't need pills might not know what it's like to have a mental disability.

If it helps, then awesome, if not, then keep working with your doctor.

Visit www.crazyboards.org or www.crazymeds.org if you want a community of people to talk to about this.

ppl like you are so crazy
its like "OMG OMG I'M HAVING ANXIETY ATTACKS"
you just need to get a hold of yourself
and only you can do that not some pill

Luvox is a great Anti-Depressant for obsessive thoughts. You could have OCD. But I need to know more. Just addressing the obsessive thoughts you describe here is something more you can do. work hard to eliminate or drastically cut down on your stress. this will greatly help ease these horrible obsessions. you could just be an obsessive worrier. the good thing about taking an Anti-Depressant is that you can combine wellbutrin or lamictil with it. I have had OCD since I was 7 and I'm 44 now. I have found that when I took Luvox, my OCD symptoms and obsessive thoughts were reduced by 70%. the stress reduction is very important along with eliminating caffeine from your diet. You also need to have a busy schedule so you can keep your mind off of your worries. Try going to bed earlier or waking up a little later. get involved in a few extra activities. You can help yourself to manage this without having to take too strong of a medication. goodluck.

it's an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), so yes, it can

SSRI: messages in the brain are passed between small gaps in cells and SSRI's stimulate these messages

SSRI intended uses: clinical depression, anxiety disorders (including social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder), eating disorders, and chronic pain

Did you have anything like this before becoming pregnant / giving birth?

Pregnancy, and the birth process, causes a strain on the body. Looking after a child can be demanding too (eg. interrupted sleep). Poor diet can have a similar effect. Not having time to relax, and relaxing improperly, are other timebombs.

When the body is run down / overloaded, this is called "depression". Symptoms often include anxiety, obsessional thoughts, irrational thoughts, memory problems, "stress".

How effective Prozac is depends on the cause of the depression, because Prozac is designed to only alter serotonin levels. Keep your doctor informed as to your recovery so she can consider changing your prescription. Make sure she checks your blood pressure!
