Question about Prozac and the Illinois shooting....?!

Question: It seems to be there is a catch 22 with this drug. The side effects are that it can cause suicidal tendancies (and yet they claim that going off it can too.)

So how does one ever know the true reason one would do something like this?

"Prozac is a drug generally prescribed for major depression. It and similar antidepressants carry warning labels about risks for suicidal behaviour in patients younger than Kazmierczak, who was 27.

Still, stopping these drugs can also lead to suicidal thoughts and behaviour. And taking them may increase the risk for other violence if they're mistakenly prescribed as the only treatment for patients in a depressive phase of bipolar disorder, psychiatrists say. In that case, the drugs may trigger a manic phase that could include aggressive behaviour toward others."

What do they really know about these drugs and frankly I doubt the qualifications of most who prescribe.

Prozac can cause feelings of depression and in some people it can actually cause aggression. I think when they refer to stopping the meds causing suicidal behavior they may be referring to suddenly stopping the medication cold turkey. Any medication used to help mental health problems or other brain related matters can be very dangerous when abruptly stopped. You have to be slowly weaned off the medication slowly or you can suffer all kinds of side effects.

The other possibility is that maybe he was doing okay on the medication and thought he didn't need it anymore. That happens ALOT. People think since they feel better they are cured. They get off the medication and then the symptoms return or the person feels even worse.

There really is only speculation in this whole situation. I do think that meds are way over-prescribed and that people really don't have enough education about how meds can drastically alter the life of the person taking the medication.

That guy had stopped his meds. If he would have stayed on them, then maybe he would not have killed all of those students, and wounded many others.

shrink drugs should only be prescribed by shrinks. docs do it for the money. if they get you strung out on drugs, you come back and beg for more and the pharmaceutical companies give the doc lots of money.
ever wonder why we ave behavior mod shrinks that do not prescribe drugs? because they do not believe in getting some one drugged up. ever see someone on a drug like xannax have the drug taken away? even for a minute by a pharmacists to read the label? it is not pretty.

until we stop blaming guns, and start blaming the docs that pump them full of drugs, the pharmaceutical companies that pump docs full of money, and the government for letting known nuts loose on us, because they think it is funny, we will always have these people preying on us.
