Can I be fired for this?!

Question: To sum it up: Diagnosed with bipolar back in October, was fine until my employer decided to go with a cheaper insurance plan. Well, considering I didn't have insurance prior to starting this job, they consider it a pre-existing condition. So, I've been without meds for about 2 months, been doing ok.

Fast forward to today. Basically I had a breakdown at work. I called my supervisor, they found someone, and I was sent home and told I won't be able to come back until I see my doctor and get my treatment in order.

Now I'm all worried that I'm gonna get fired on Monday because of all this. If I'm seeking treatment for a medical condition, can they fire me? Any advice would be great! Thanks!

It really depends on the person you're working for.

I think it would be ridiculous for them to fire you just because you had a breakdown....since you have a medical condition, you can't help it.

However, since they said you can't come back until you see your doctor and get your treatment in order, I don't know, they sound a little weary about having a person with bipolar disorder working for them.

I think it's ridiculous and that they should be more understanding of your condition and not fire you, but if they really wanted to, they would be able to.

Good luck, and I hope they let you keep your job! :)

well you might be able to counter th eaction because of discrimination cause of your disability. im no lawyer so i advise you too look into it a lil further.

Well, they could, but I don't think they will. Your workplace will be to afraid of the repercussions of firing someone because they have bipolar...

Just explain your situation to your employer calmly. Go into work early Monday and ask to speak with him.

Tell him you will never do it again and that the only reason you went off your meds is because you are not secure enough financially to get them on your own. Stress that the new insurance has been a blow but you will work it out.

Hopefully he won't fire you for this. Good luck

And you really should be off your meds. its best to be safe. Cancel one of your commodities if necessary. Your health comes first.

yes... they can fire you. It's their job, not yours.

well is it your fault that you have this disorder? NO, how long have you been with them? what are they fireing you for? something you dont have any contol over? Are you taking medication for it?

Did they know about your condition when you were hired? If so, they'll probably work with you. And, they might anyway. Just depends on how ethical they are and how good an employee you are.

Good luck.

you should look for a new job. obviously they dont care about paying insurance for your disorder. sue them, cause they have caused you a great deal of pain.
