What should I do now? I quit smoking cigs 5 months ago, now I'm an emotional!

Question: I always smoked a cigarette to try to control my moods, but now I don't smoke and everything makes me depressed. I cry over stupid stuff like small cracks in plaster walls or water on the floor. My relatioonship seems strained and I'm angry a lot. Then, I will get reeal happy about everything and sing and dance around. My girlfriend thinks I'm bipolar, I don't know what to do? Tonight I took perkaset and I'm happy, but I know that's wrong too, and there's only a couple left anyway.
I feel annoyed with everybody a lot, and then I get way depressed. Does this sound like manic-depression? And that's the same as bipolar? What meds do they use to treat?

Either you're going through withdrawal or you DO have emotional issues and smoking was like a crutch. Don't diagnose yourself. Go see either a doctor or a therapist.

You could try the patch, its not smoking, and it helps with cravings, and might help with your moods, or you could try drinking at night, you know, liquor, but than you might get addicted to that. Many say that the only way to break one habit is to introduce another one to yourself. Make it something positive, like, hm, you could buying a punching bag and just going Bruce Lee on it when your feeling blue, or try cooking, or jogging, bike ride, photography, just something to get your mind off of smoking, something you enjoy to put you in a good mood.

It doesn't sound like quitting smoking was really your problem. That may have heped you a ltttle with your emotional dilimmas, but it sounds to me like you need to go seek some counseling. You may be suffering from depression. It won't hurt to go seek help, and then they can get you the help that you need to help control your moods, whether it be by medication or just by talking to someone! Good luck!

It does not sound like bipolar disorder. You don't need to medicate, you stopped smoking so why pollute with other meds? You may be going through a major depression however; see a health care professional.

You could be going g threw a change which many woman do the best thing for you to do is to go to the doctor and tell him what you are going threw! He may put you on some Mead's to help you a bit. I have been on them before after I have my second child and you will be fine and it should be long term either. Best of luck to you and yours!

well, we give up one habit for another... it is normal to need a vice, and it is normal to be upset sometimes. Try to suck on lifesavers. I think though if you are always depressed, or you have large highs and lows, you may need an antidepressant. You can get a supplement online that basically does the same thing, it is call 5HTP. Here honey, buy some of this: http://www.amazon.com/Source-Naturals-5-...
AND, get some more sleep! You could be sleep deprived you know... I get rather crabby when I am tired.
And, here is a link to a book about 5HTP: http://www.amazon.com/5-HTP-Natural-Over...

Sounds like you might be bipolar/manic depressive. There are alot of medications out there that help, but you need to see a doctor. If you can't find a doctor go to or call local health department they can usually direct you to the right place. I quit smoking almost 3 months ago and yeah my emotions are all over the place but I can definitely breath better and I don't cough anymore.

How long did you smoke for? Your body, and brain, are probably just going through some major withdrawls. While cig companies have been swearing that they have been making cigs less addictive, studies have shown that it is quite the opposite. Plus, you got those nasty brain receptors - nicotine receptors that just aren't getting any.
I would try to find something to do with your time, especially when you find yourself under stress. For me, this was exercising. I started walking on the treadmill even before I quit smoking. Whenever I would get stressed I would walk. Eventually exercising was my way out - it took over my time when I would otherwise be smoking. Plus, I got healthier because I was exercising.
Try to find something that you enjoy doing. It may be hard at first, but it may just help.
If nothing seems to help after awhile, I would consider going to speak with someone and doing a little therapy.
Good luck.

You are going to go through the withdrawals; it happens to everyone who quits. You need to eat foods that do not trigger your cravings.. Milk, fruits and Cinnamon work for some.. drink lots of water and run in place.. I know it helped me out.

The mood swings will eventually go away.
I was a smoker for years & I used "Wellbutrin" to help me with my transition.
