Are mental illnesses curable?!

Question: There are 3 major mental illnesses; schizophrenia, bi polar disorder, and major depression. The first 2 cannot be cured. Once you have them you have them. That is because they are caused by the brain not being able to regulate properly the chemicals that are needed for it to work well.

Fortunately, there are medicines that can help some people with these illnesses to live normal lives. Because everyone's body is different and because these illnesses have different degrees of severity, some will never have perfectly normal lives, but their lives can be much better than if they didn't have the medicine.

Major Depression has more than one cause. If the cause is the situation the person is in and/or due to negative self talk, then it can be cured. Medications need to be used in the beginning because the person's life situation and/or negative self talk have made it difficult for the brain to regulate the proper chemical levels.

If the person's life situation and the person's self talk can be changed, then at some time the person can be taken off of the medication and they may never have a problem with depression again. If that is the case, then the person with depression has been "cured".

For some people, they probably are, with certain meds. Sometimes tho, medicine isn't a cure, but adds to the problem. Every case is so different. It can be hard to figure out. Sometimes mental illnesses can be "cured" by changing a life threatening situation. Treatable may be a better word.

Yes. It always is but may take a long time. It's always about childhood issues, always..............and i know it's totally debatable.

i don't think so for the most part. mental illnesses can be treated, sure, with medication and lifestyle changes... but it will always be there in the end, of course depending on the severity. I'm sure with a lot of therapy self-esteem issues can be "cured" per se, but.. say, bipolar disorder? It's there for life, curbed only by medication and choices.

Again, I think it all depends on the severity and the condition/illness.

What "illness" do you mean in specific?

I was reading up on it -

http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/... is a good site with lots of info

Also, kind of goes with what I think on treatment v. curing/recovering:

"Do People Recover?
This is hard to judge, because schizoaffective disorders have the two componants to them. However, the answer is probably mostly no, although the psychosis and the mood disorders can be treated, the condition is rarely cured, but managed, with the person going for periods of time free from symptoms of either. "

yes yes.. who is mad, and who is not? how can you tell?

I believe that the mind can cure itself and the ailment that it is inflicted. The trick is getting everyone to know it's power to heal.

~yes~

I have the illness, and after much research the answer as of now is no. There is absolutely no cure.

Of the psychological disorders, there is only one CURABLE disorder : Multiple Personality (even that takes many years of therapy treatment & not everyone with the disorder is able to achieve complete freedom ) (Multiple Personality is the extreme end of Dissociative Identity Disorders)

Some of them are. You could say that depression is a mental illness and people get cured of that.
