There are so many different types of mental illness. Depression usually can be characterized by a "loss of enjoyment of life". Symptoms could be loss or increase in appetite, loss or increase of sleep, agitation...etc.

People who seriously think about suicide will frequently talk about it or death in general.

First of all, any thought of suicide should be considered serious and taken seriously. Any thought of suicide could become fatal.

There are many many different types of mental illnesses so I really don't know how to answer that question. Symptoms differ for a lot of them, but some common ones for several different disorders seem to be depression, anxiety, mood swings, change in appetite, etc.

I wish you were more specific, but it's not impossible to answer.

Depending on the mental illness, they are characterized by many things. Anger/Personality-related disorders such as Bipolar disorder, general anger management issues, etc....they can be characterized from things such as "going off the handle" about small things, short-temper, rage, etc. Many of the popular disorders involve depression. Signs of these can include loss of interest in things once important or enjoyable, loss of happiness, feelings of worthlessness, as well as fatigue, loss of appetite, increase i appetite, etc. Mental disorders can affect you physically along with the mental issues. But there are so so many characterizations, they are based upon what disorder you are looking at. Warning signs are basically the same as symptoms, except symptoms tend ot be more severe.
You can't really "tell" if they have these thoughts. People like this, they learn how to hide it very well(I certainly did). If they do make a scene of it, then it's all for attention, keep that in mind. They only way you could even suspect any thoughts like this, is if they are just blah about everything. If they act like everything that once meant something is now nothing, then there's a slight possibility. Really, this is one of those things that you get a gut feeling about. You just get a feeling there is somethng wrong.
