If you are suffering from major depression, is that considered a disablity?!

Question: Yes, there was a co-worker that was so severely depressed that he eventually had to take a medical retirement. Work insisted he also apply for social security disability and (FIRST TIME OUT) they approved it.

So, yes it can be considered a disability. But he literally had years of very spotty attendance at work before he finally applied for disability. Most companies would have found a reason to get rid of him but he knew how to work the Americans with Disability Act and etc....

(He also had congestive heart failure so that was part of the package submitted. But I know the fluctuating work attendance caused by the depression was a major part of his justification)

I don't think it would be considered a disability but I know it is considered a mental illness.

No, I don't think it is automatically considered a disability. It is just a disorder. There are many people that suffer from Major Depression that lead very successful lives that are extremely high functioning. They manage it with medication, stress management and daily coping skills.

That is not to say that someone with MDD cannot be considered disabled. There are people that are not functioning as well and are actually on disability for the disorder. It is such an individual thing.

Also, many diagnosed with MDD are diagnosed with other co-occuring disorders. This can add to the complications, and is frequently the case for those that are collecting disability benefits.

There are many things that one can do in order to cope with their MDD. Millions of people have been diagnosed with it and live successful lives.

Right now I'm waiting for a hearing on receiving supplemental social security disability and by the way it is a very long wait to get a hearing for disability. I'm applying based on a severe hearing loss and major depression. Many people find ways to cope with hearing loss but when you have major depression it is hard to even cope with life. I consider major depression more of a disability than hearing loss. If your thinking about applying for disability are you willing to wait almost 2 years with very little income? Because that is actually what is going to happen. People have died because of the ridiculously long wait. Wish you luck. Hope my answer helped.

It can be a disability but you have to have it for some time
