Why are some people so afraid of the word depression?!

Question: So many people i've seen on yahoo answers have answered questions about depression stating its a 'made up disease' like adhd and add. Do you beilive this? I sure don't. Depression does not spring from music, or emo kids. Why would doctors presribe medication for it if it didn't exist?

Everybody gets the blues now and then or has bad days. Depression is when it's always with you, like a little black cloud always obscuring your view of the sun. Scientists are discovering that there are actual chemical imbalances in the brains of many depressed individuals. That's why often the right medication does help. For some people, meds alone do the trick. For many, therapy alone or along with the right meds bring the sunshine and energy and hope back into their lives.

I think so many people are afraid of the word "depression" because they don't understand it and don't know what to do or how to act around someone who is known to be depressed. Also there have been so many media reports about people flipping out and shooting up half a college campus (and somewhere in the report they disclose that the person was/is/has been under treatment for depression).

If they only knew how many of their family members, friends, neighbors, people they know and trust, are being treated for this condition. Many are highly functional, high-achieving individuals, artists, musicians, competent business professionals...but it's still not safe to disclose this condition as it changes how people view you, and not usually in a good way.

Hi--You are totally right, it isn't a made up disease it is a mental illness. Some people on here I believe just don't know much nor care to know so that is why they say that. I suffer from depression & social anxiety disorder. Any body that would tell me that it was fake is the one that really needs to have their head examined.

Of course it is a real sickness and i will find u a link to prove it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_de... Ok that may not be the best link but u know how the internet is for reliability But dont worry u did find the right place (Yahoo Answers) we really care about each other
Do not let anyone make u feel ignorant!

I suffer from depression daily..and yes I agree that it is a mental illness. It is frustrating when people think that you can just snap out of it..like it is something you are feeling on purpose. God, I wish everyday that I could just snap my fingers and make it go away for good.

Well, physicians believe in it, and that's good enough for me. If you've ever loved someone that was clinically depressed or experienced it yourself, you already know it's real.

Next time someone says that, ask him to show you his license to practice medicine.

Yeah, it's bullcrap, as is ADD/ADHD. I was 'diagnosed' (teachers and school counsellors watching my behaviour) with 'major depression' and 'social anxiety disorder' and heavily medicated against my will for it when I was younger; it's bullshi.t. It doesn't exist, or at the least, it's far, far over-diagnosed. All the treatment I needed was to realise I was being pathetic and weak, and change my personality.

I hate those that feel that it is Made up disease. It is very real. It isnt like you just choose to be depressed. Depression can come from all kinds of things. Alot of it depends on how well a person can deal with stress. If you werent raised to learn to cope with things the positvie way you could be come depressed. Chemical imbalances in the brain is another form of depression.

because they might be depressed and dont want to be.
