Why were there cameras?!

Question: i had another therapy session, but an individual one this time (i've only had two individuals so far). and in the room i noticed there was one of those round black camera things in each corner of the ceiling. but i don't think there are any of those in the rooms where i've had my sessions with my parents. why are there cameras? is it incase the person being given therapy gets violent or out-of-hand, so that others can see and come to help? is it for the protection of the therapist, as there are no other adults there to control the person? it made me nervous, i hate the idea of being watched, even if i'm doing nothing wrong. and now i keep thinking of the fact that when i was in that room last time i cried through almost the whole session, and now they'll have that on camera, and the whole idea worries me and creeps me out.

It's used for supervision, mostly. Many sessions are videotaped because the therapist then goes over the session with his/her supervisor later (some are live monitored, but most aren't). The purpose is for therapist training. It IS the case, however, that you should have signed a release granting permission for its use. If you did not, then it is important that you speak to your therapist about it. It is possible that the camera was not turned on.

This is not something you need to worry about. 9 times out of 10, it's a simple, training issue (for the therapist).

It's to keep an eye on the therapist as much as it is the patient (or client). It insures neither of them do anything inappropriate. Also to have a record of the proceedings of the session.

there are cameras almost everywhere these days try and put it out of your mind whilst you are there (I know this may be hard as you have already become aware of them) and like you say its prolly for the safety of the staff

Ask them to put a towel over each of the lenses. If it makes you uncomfortable, the therapy is tainted and your therapist should know this. Talk......................

it is for the protection of the therapist and the client if one gets violent or inappropriate
i felt kinda weird too but if you talk to your therapist about it they will either help you to deal with the cameras or turn it off
good luck!

It's so that if either of you comes out of the room and says the other one abused me (in any way, shape or form) there's video proof of what happens. It's for the safety of both of you, and you're entitled to ask for a copy of the tape if you want to, just to make sure. There should be no sound recorded, so your conversation won't be documented or heard by anyone else.

If you're uncomfortable, talk to your therapist as it might be something he/she would be interested to discuss with you. Sounds silly, but when I told my therapist I didn't like her chairs we ended up talking almost as much about them as anything else!

i think you need to ask.....your have a right to know if you are being recorded

If the therapist did not inform you that you were being filmed, report your therapist to his/her licensing body. Your therapist is in violation of the privacy act.

You have a right to know when you are being filmed when in therapy. Further, you have a right to know where and how the footage is stored, who is viewing it, where it is being viewed and for what purposes. You would have to provide CONSENT for filming and the sharing of the footage. Clearly, you did NOT provide consent. Make sure his licensing body reports back to you regarding your complaint and their findings of their investigation into your complaint. The therapist's unlawful actions must be stopped. Footage of you in therapy must be found and turned over to you or destroyed.

they are there in case any thing happens.

"Big Brother"?

I would imagine the reason for the cameras is as there are no staff working there to watch for any violence. Try not to think about this, it only heightens you're problems and we've all got enough of them.
