CBT is great for some things. You do not say what your diagnosis is. Be aware that it is not a quick fix, I do not think it works very well in groups unless the individuals are also working with a therapist privately. You cannot take the technique and run with it. It is not a bag of tricks you use like a bandaide to make you feel better.

CBT is a method for rerouting neural pathways that control thoughts and behaviors. These thoughts and behaviors once worked for an individual as coping mechanisms. They probably began in early childhood and have been reinforced for many years but these behaviors or thought patterns have become part of the problem and block progress toward the solution of better mental health.

Little by little CBT helps us discover those pathways, helps us realize and identify new coping methods, and supports us while we rehearse and practice the new skills. It takes many repetitions of the new skills to begin to erase the old pathways and lay down new more productive ones. It is hard work for the patient and the therapist, it takes time (months to years), trust, medication to help support the brain chemistry that controls the neurological process and a collaborative relationship between the patient and his/her medical/mental health team.

Go for it. Your life is at stake here. It can be a healthy one with good abilities to deal with all the ups and downs or it can be a life of depression, anxiety, guilt and misery. It's a no brainer to me.

what is CBT

Yes, I have had CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). I believe it does work. It looks at how your thoughts are affecting your behavior/feelings. You have to want to change and be willing to open up for it to work. You also have to find a therapist that works for you. I have tried some therapists that did not work for me. As far as cost is concerned, that can really vary. If you have insurance and that particular therapist is covered by your insurance company, it will of course be cheaper. My therapist (with insurance) costs me $10 dollars per visit. If I didn't have insurance, I think the cost is something like $70 per visit. Good luck! :)

CBT or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy stresses that you do something positive and let the positive emotion catch up when it does naturally. The problem is that sometimes the problem is organic. It's like watering a diseased plant and taking care of it's nutrients in hopes that the disease will naturally dissipate. I've tried it. It didn't work. I don't recommend it. Neuroses are better treated with psychotherapy in my book.

as a psychologist i would assume this to be cognitive behavioural therapy right??
certain sessions you may get NHS free, it depends on your situation. I know our local practice gives up to your first 8 sessions free. The doctor really should have talked you through this.
If you are going privately, the sessions will differ in price immensely.

For it working, it is known as one of the most effective theraputics, but also please be aware, it is not for everybody. Go with an open mind & see how you find it.

Yes, but you have to give it more chances to let it work and see what the CBT says. He/she will tell you. I am trying to find one for me too. So just give it a chance all righty? Good Luck to you.

Did a 7 week course recently (was free) group environment. It's just good advice, learning to put a positive spin on (hot thoughts) that precede feelings of panic etc changes the attitude to our outlook.

Personally if u are really bad with symptoms then it's hard to use the info and change your thinking as your mind may feel swamped but it's an excellent tool to use when u are at a level where you feel more in control.
