Name calling
Threatening to leave if you do not comply
Talking ugly to you regarding your looks, brains, or weight
Manipulation
Withholding love and support
Lies
---A verbal abuse website exists*-google it.
I am a survivor of emotional abuse. It lead me to a suicide attempt and I am now fighting the batterer in court.

Not speaking for days if disagreed with.
Threatening to leave if crossed.
Talking about former partners an comparing to the detriment of partner with at the moment.

My real life example was a close friend. He would tell people my personal business, and when I asked him not to he would berate me, spit on me, and say he was not my friend anymore, when he was the one in the wrong. Later on, he would apologize and say I was his only true friend, then it would start all over again. I was young and STUPID!!!

Threatening suicide if relationship breaks down. Making the other person responsible for one's own inadequacy - jealousy.

"you stupid worthless piece of trash!"

"what the heck is wrong with you?!"

"I'm going to leave you." basically degrading a person, saying things just to make them cry. The whole thing is just sick.

For me it is all about power. Making someone feel bad about themself and then that person believing what they have said to be the truth about them. My ex partner used to try to do it all the time. He was paranoid I would leave him so he would say things like 'you're boring' or 'you're fat' 'but I love you'. It got to the point where I beleived no one else would be interested in me. So when he forgot my birthday or valentines it didn't matter. However, I have good friends who confirmed positives about me and made me realise that none of the things he said were true. Emotional abuse, in my opinion is as bad as physical abuse. My partner used to start arguments all the time and throw abuse at me that was completely unrelated to the issue he originally started the row about. So for example: I didn't answer a call from him so he would start a row. Within a nano second he had flipped it into an 'attack' of my appearance etc. Good luck with the essay!

Emotional abuse takes many forms; it can be stopping you from seeing your friends and family, putting you down and telling you that you are worthless, using the children against you, playing mind games with you. In fact, doing anything that makes you emotionally sad.
Hope this helps.

Do a Google search for "emotional abuse" and just read some of the pages you find. They'll give tons of examples and personal histories.

You can also look for forums online where people who have been abused talk about their experiences. Do some searching in these areas, and I'm sure you'll be able to find plenty of material before Friday.

saying or doing things that damages self-respect and dignity of a human being
