About my friend...?!

Question: Really this is about my friend. I, myself, am already in therapy and it has done wonders for me. I've suggested therapy to my friend. She says she doesn't have time. I feel like I am the only person she has to rely on. It's quite sad. She gets very depressed and she throws herself into her work (retail manager) and she works very long shifts without time off. Besides that, she is single ... divorcee. She thinks she will never be with someone again. She thinks no one cares about her...no one loves her. And she won't take time from her crazzy work life to help herself. So I am determined to help her. I know I can... I just don't know how. HELP PLEASE!

I think you should encourage her to try meds too. Once she feels better (even if it IS a placebo effect, and not the med) she will not be so negative, and will be more likely to consider counseling.

You could also pick up a workbook at the library on dealing with depression & work thru it with her. You can pitch it as you want to get some feedback or something, since you have been depressed before.

Otherwise, make sure you are watching cheerful movies, listening to cheerful music, etc. when you are with her. That gives a person a little break.

My whole family has serious mental illness, and my brotehr & I are the only ones who got help.So we have 4 siblings and a mom who never got help.

i would suggest a psychiatrist to your friend if i were you. try to get her on some sort of mood stabilizer or anti-depressant because she is thinking obviously negatively about life and her relationship situation and medicine might help her get a different aspect about her life/situation. sometimes a persons mind is against them and theyre thei own worst enemy. hope i helpoed a little
