Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme changes in mood (poles) -- from mania to depression. Between these mood swings, a person with Bipolar disorder may experience normal moods.

In the manic phase:

Euphoria or irritability
Excessive talk; racing thoughts
Inflated self-esteem
Unusual energy; less need for sleep
Impulsiveness, a reckless pursuit of gratification -- shopping sprees, impetuous travel, more and sometimes promiscuous sex, high-risk business investments, fast driving
Hallucinations and or delusions (in cases of bipolar disorder with psychotic features)

In the depressive phase:

Depressed mood and low self-esteem
Low energy levels and apathy
Sadness, loneliness, helplessness, guilt
Slow speech, fatigue, and poor coordination
Insomnia or oversleeping
Suicidal thoughts and feelings
Poor concentration
Lack of interest or pleasure in usual activities

Basically, someone with bipolar disorder tends to have "episodes" where they are extremely happy and then "episodes" where they are extremely sad.....almost like a depression. Some in other words, extreme highs and extreme lows.....it can be dangerous because in extreme highs- that person could experience feelings of grandiosity and in extreme lows- that person could feel suicidal

If you want more detailed information, look on the internet by google-ing bipolar disorder......

They are MENTALLY ILL because a schizoid personality is MENTAL ILLNESS.

bipolar has a strong genetic component, more than other mental disorders. In identical twin studies, if one twin has it, the other has about a 60% chance of having it. I think the chance of a sibling having it was about 15%.

the first drug used to treat bipolar disorder was lithium. Lithium is the only drug that was specifically developed for bipolar. The others are schizohrenia or epilepsy or depression meds.

Bipolar disorder has about 15% suicide rate.

Bipolar presents in many ways besides the classic depression alternating with mania, with normal periods between. there is rapid cycling, mixed moods etc.

OK there are a few. You should check my numbers - I'm not positive.
