What do they mean when they say depression is caused by hormonal imbalances?!

Question: can anyone explain in detail?

Answers: can anyone explain in detail?

The common and most widely accepted explanation for mental illnesses, like depression, is that they are caused by neurotransmitter deficiencies or overactive reuptake systems for specific neurotransmitters.

First, a neurotransmitter is a chemical that the cells in your brain and nervous system use to communicate with each other. Unlike any other cells in your body, nerve cells (neurons) do not touch each other. Instead, they send chemical messages to one another.

The most common of these neurotransmitters indicated in depression is Serotonin. The medications used to treat this either inhibit the break down of Serotonin or slow its reuptake by the body allowing it to stimulate the next neuron in line just a little longer. Other drugs, like Wellbutrin, work on other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine.

Kinda like that. Hope this helps

To my knowledge, it's usually in reference to female hormones related to PMS or menopause.

Depression has some genetic factors. If a parent or grandparent has been affected, it can be passed down through to the children. The imbalances that are out of balance are serotonin and norepinephrin. These are brain neurotransmitters. Some disorders have too much of these and others have not enough. For example, bipolar depression has been linked to not enough serotonin in the brain. That is what the anti-depressants do is help bring the brain back into balance. Some forms of depression are mild and do not need long term medication. Others that are serious like schizophrenia and bipolar usually require long term medication and talk therapy. The synapses (ends of nerve cells) connect at a junction. Since they don't actually connect, the cell that wants to send the sinal releases hormones into the space. The receptor cell has receptors. When they recept the hormones, the signal gets translated from hormonal into electrical to continue traveling.

The reason that this may cause depression because these cells are carrying information to a place in the brain telling a part of the brain to fire. If the cells that carry information to the emotion part of the brain, the signal will decrease it's activity there, and that is what depression is-the area that makes you happy is not getting enough info to tell them to function.

Hypothyroidism is the insufficient production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. this can cause depression and is one reason a person suffering from depression should have a complete physical exam and blood tests.

Well, fierst of all depression is not caused by harmonal imbalance, it is the harmonal imbalnce which is caused by depression. When you face alot of tense or you feel that something is bugging you from inside and you keep on thinking that for a day or more than a day. And you keep on facing your problems, if your mood changes everytime i.e 5 min before yes i would go. Later no i think i would stay. CONFUSION takes birth . If you seem to face this then you are in deep depression, and then your harmones imbalances
