Can Buspar make my anxiety worse?!

Question: My doc prescribed Buspar for me. However, I feel my anxiety is worse since I've started taking it. I know it needs to build up in your system for a couple of weeks (I've only taken it for a week), and I have started with a smaller dose. Still, I feel spacey and agitated after I take it. I feel I can deal with my anxiety better without it.

Anyone else experienced this while on Buspar? I will be going back to my doc in a week or so, so I will be talking to her about it anyway. I just wanted to hear some of your experiences.

My husband did not have very good luck with it. He was nervous and jittery the whole two months he took it.

At least see how you feel after taking it a few weeks before you decide it's not for you.

I have never taken BuSpar, but I was very interested in taking it, and I did a lot of research, eventually deciding against taking the drug, and going for another drug to help with my anxiety. What I found was that BuSpar can induce some anxiety in some people.

Nervousness, lightheadedness, excitement, anger/hostility, and confusion can all be associated side effects. Several people have also told me about "brain zaps", where they sort of feel like, just for a split second, as though they've had the tiniest, unnoticeable little micro-seizure, if that makes sense.

Although the exact mechanism of action of BuSpar is unclear, it's believed that it upregulates serotonin, similarly, but differently to SSRI drugs that are also often used as anti-anxiety medications (and antidepressants) like Lexapro, Celexa, Paxil, and Prozac. Sometimes, anxiety or depression that is resistant to treatment by an SSRI is supplemented with BuSpar, and that can often work.

Good luck!

like any drug regiment it takes a while before you feel any real difference, and buspar is no exception, you may need to have the dosage adjusted gradually to fit you, most people feel like they can handle their anxiety without it, and often you can but it's quite common to have it come up every now and then, and when this happens don't get discouraged. just get committed to learning a few tricks on how to deal with it. buspar won't make your anxiety worse, in the right dosage it can assist you in getting better at dealing with the disorder. best of luck to you.

i'm on it, and it seemed to help with the anxiety.

the only bad side affects that i've had were dizziness and fainting.
