How do i talk to my doctor about the possibility of teen ADD?!

Question: I'm not sure how to say I think I might have ADD.

it runs in my family and within the last year, I've had multiple symptoms that have changed my lifestyle drastically.

what should i asked or talk about?
i don't want it to seem like I'm diagnosing myself but I want to suggest the possibility.

You could say that you have a history of ADD in your family and that you have some concerns that you may have it too, explain your symptoms and ask the doc what he/she thinks. Ask if you could have tests done to determine whetehr you have it or not. There is nothing wrong with going to your Doc and saying you think you have this or that, it doesn't mean your diagnosing yourself at all. You know yourself better than anyone else.

You should just tell him that you have a family history of it, and it is something that you are concerned with and would like to be screened for. I'd let him know what signs you are having that would show you may possibly have ADD

many people go through this: just tell him it runs in ur family. and you have the symptoms. its sounds like you have it though...my opinion or ur highly likely to have it.

Be honest ask questions and tell him what is happening with you......

I have ADD too... well, i just told my docter that i had been having trouble paying attention and all the reasons that made me feel ADD and then I said, "so, what do you think is going on? is it add?"

It doesnt hurt to ask questions.
"The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask"

Just explain your symptoms to the doctor and ask what it could be and if it could be ADD. Tell the doctor you are worried about it and he will tell you whether or not you have anything to be concerned about. Good Luck.

well all i have to say is that i would not take a pill or meds for it because it makes alot of ppl very angry... it mad me very agry and the best thing to do is try and control urself like its somethink that u gotta fix on ur own... but you said that it runs in ur family and id say the best thing to do is ask one ur family members bout it that has it!
goodluck

Schedule an appointment with our doctor. Explain to him that you think you could possible have ADD because you have been experiencing many of the symptoms and that it also runs in your family, and the doctor will tell you what to do form there. It won't sound like you're diagnosing yourself. Don't worry about it, good luck!!

OK, bring up that your not able to focus and all of the symptoms you are having.

He will most likely make you take an ADD test that is done on the computer and how it works is you to these mental exercises on the computer.

He will mostly likely make you feel out a survey and your parent and he might ask to send one to one of your teachers, you you dont have to let your teacher feel out one because you have paitent privacy.

Family Primary Doctors are not really likely to precibe ADD meds because that isnt your speciality. You will need to get referred to a psych.

Hope it helps.

Just be open with you health professonal.

alright.....SO. you think you may have adolescent ADD?
well....here's the thing you can do to concentrate and calm down
the problem...ever drink energy drinks or sodas with lots of
caffeine and wonder why you don't get very hyper like most people do? it's because caffeine acts like a stimulant [such as Ritalin..in fact one little can of red bull or Monster equals like 5mg or 10mg of Ritalin] since it runs in the family, your parents won't deny you a trip to the doc. but talk to your parents [if you are a minor that is.] i recommend going to a psychiatrist rather than your regular doctor...they know a lot more. also, it's important to research on ADD, and look up diets for ADD/ADHD....it can help a lot too. when you talk to a professional, say "i think i have been developing ADD but i'm not sure cause i don't want to diagnose myself" and they will help. but until you go, go to the gas station or some store and get Monster [sugar free, too much sugar does something weird to people with ADD/ADHD i think.] and that should help calm down your nerves.

You might consider writing down on paper a short list of your major symptoms and then ask your parents to make an appointment with the family physician who can take it from there.

By the way, there is a book about caffeine and ADHD, the How To Cure Hyperactivity book (1981) about ADHD by C. Thomas Wild with Anita Uhl Brothers, M.D. which reports that coffee - caffeine (100 mg) compounds for a few (not everyone) work better than stronger stimulant meds such as Ritalin, Dexedrine, and Adderall to temporarily reduce ADHD symptoms. Good luck.
