PTSD does have phases. In early days it is most intense.
Counseling / Therapy does help. You learn what triggers your episodes and how to avoid the triggers. You learn ways of calming yourself, ways to reconnect to here and now.
And you also talk about the trauma itself.
My therapist asked me to keep a daily journal. If I had difficulty with my PTSD, and couldn't get beyond it, I was to write and write through the emotion of it. I was to go to my safety instructions written at the front of the journal, to calm myself, and to reassure me that the images I saw were THEN and this is TODAY. Danger is gone today. This is called "grounding" when you access each of your senses, one at a time to help you separate today from the past.

Look for several things of a certain color.
Listen for what you can hear.
Touch wash your hands in cold water or pinch your arm
Smell and name what you can smell
Taste - a mint or gum or other strong taste
As you do this little exercise the present comes front and center for you -- so remind yourself that you are safe today.
Putting the PTSD's feeling unsafe behind you, step into what is here and now and today and SAFE.

Having a place or a friend to go to who will listen and calm you is a good idea.
As years ahead pass by, the PTSD will fade. It never quite leaves, but it doesn't control me. Its presence these days still lurks in shadowy corners of dimly lit places setting my mood on edge. Educating your family as to what triggers you can be a genuine help as you try to avoid those things.

PTSD is not something that you will 'get rid of'. It is something that you have to learn to cope with .

As a psychologist, and a person with severe PTSD, I can tell you that there are many ways to successfully manage your disorder. There will always be periods of time where your symptoms become difficult to manage, but there are ways to slightly tweek your life in order to manage it for the most part.

The way you think is the #1 issue. It would be a great benefit to work with a Congitive Behavioral therapist. I believe this to be the most effective form of treatment of this diesorder. Stress management and reduction are also VERY important. To find ways to reduce the amount of stresss that you allow in your life... the find ways to reduce the way that stress effects your life.

PTSD, as the name says, is a stress disorder. The inablilty to cope with stress. Also, your body is permanently revved up, as is your mind. Find ways to allow your body to rest and your mind to rest, and find ways to REDUCE your stress!!

Go see a ptsd specialist... it is so worth the time!
Good luck,
Robin

Since it's already been covered...I'm gonna say listen to Robin.
