Would they try to hospitalize me if I told them this?!

Question: I was thinking about making an appointment with the mental health side of the student clinic.

I have a long history of clinical depression and prior suicide attempts. Lately (several months) I've been on a downswing. Over the past several weeks I've been having stronger suicidal thoughts than usual, and I've been carefully considering methods of suicide.

(For example, going home a week ago I was scouting out places to run off the road. At one point when there was no other traffic in sight (this was on an interstate highway) around I took my hands off the wheel and promised myself I'd let the car crash if the car started to drift within 10 seconds. Oddly, it didn't even though it usually pulls to the right.)

I've also been having a hard time concentrating on class readings and in class, and have a hard time getting out of bed. I live alone and don't know anyone in my college town.

Do you think if I told them all of this they'd want to hospitalize me?

Yes, hospitalization is a possibility, particularly given that you have indicated suicidal ideation and plan. However, unless you also indicate that you intend to follow through with your plan to kill yourself, it is unlikely that you would be committed against your will. For your own safety, hospitalization is definitely a treatment level you should consider.

Hang in there,
~M~

You want some help. That's why you're making an effort to get an appointment. If they feel it would be best to admit you for some thorough evaluations then that will be good. There is no shame in that.

Please don't hurt yourself (or someone else), or worse. Make that call now!

Yes.

Don't kill yourself in the first place. Life is very precious and killing yourself is very selfish. It is also a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Take deep breaths over and over again and just tell yourself that everything will be okay again. I would think about killing myself sometimes, but i have never gone through with it and don't want to either. I tell myself that suicide is illegal and that stops me. Also, you have so much to live for.

If you are on any meds, i suggest you come off of them because they can just make you feel worse. I know this because studies have shown that they just further increase negativity to people who use medication. You don't want to be in a hospital either, hooked up to IV's and tubes trying to get better. Learn to become your own doctor and treat yourself in better ways other than wanting to go to the doc.
Feel free to send me an email if you would like to talk to me further.

Have mercy...Definitely get some help...at least talk to someone...perhaps making new friends would remove the isolation and depression of being alone...try getting out and finding new people to talk with...go out dancing, join a sport, do something...anything would help...you sound like a danger to yourself...so yes more than likely they would hospitalize you. Maybe also figure out why you started on this route again...too much pressure...too much expectations of self...family pressure...what's your trigger?

Do you want to be hospitalized?
I believe if you are not actively suicidal in the present they wouldn't hospitalize you.

I think it's a very good idea to go to the mental health side of the student clinic.

...and promise us you won't harm yourself!

Good luck
